I booked this hotel at short notice and chose it for its proximity to the hospital a relative was in. The rate I found for a single room B&B was a mere £39 (including booking fee) so my expectations were not high to say the least. Yes, it's a bit shabby, yes the room was an "interesting" layout but the staff were extremely helpful, the hotel was clean and breakfast was excellent. I was even offered use of the receptionist's computer when it became apparent there was a problem with their free wi-fi service.

It is not where you would choose for your honeymoon but it is a perfectly good hotel and splendid value for money. I would not hesitate to use it again and plan to stay there with my wife on our next visit.

My father booked to stay in this hotel over the Christmas period as he was visiting us and it is local to our flat. He booked well in advance in order to ensure availability, but was contacted just a couple of weeks before his stay to inform him that the hotel would now be closed for Christmas as they had had a coach party cancel. He was offered another hotel from the same chain in the city centre (too far from the southside), but given little other help - just not good enough for this busy time of year. Fortunately, he found a room at the Ivory Hotel just the other side of the park, although at a slightly higher rate as he had to book a double at this late notice. He has now stayed in both hotels before and much prefers the Ivory, so I would suggest prospective Ewington guests choose there instead.

Following comments re. refurbishments my husband and I were expecting a relatively decent standard of accomodation, however our stay here in August 07 was far from meeting a good standard.

The entrance to the hotel is lovely, and reception staff friendly and accomodating, however, once past reception things take a turn for the worse.

The lift is tiny, barely big enough for two people and one suitcase, added to which, the buttons for the lift are loose and require a lot of pressure to work. The lift judders, shakes and makes some horrific bangs as it passes each floor and when it reaches it's destination. Numerous times over our three night stay my husband and I had to wait in the lift for a good few minutes before it moved - if even the slightest bit claustrophobic the lift is a nightmare!

Our room (391) was very clean however the wallpaper was peeling on both the walls and the ceiling. While clean, the bedlinen had numerous holes, evidently through use and general wear. In the bathroom, where the wallpaper was peeling, the paint underneath was flaking off and everytime the bathroom door shut there was a flurry of paint flakes falling on the floor! The bedroom window had a large crack running across one corner.

Breakfast was reasonable, however, I would agree with previous reviews that staff seem a little rushed and other guests (the bus parties) receive a higher level of service. Every morning over the length of our stay things like the orange juice/milk failed to be replenished within the 20-30 mins we were at breakfast. Cooked breakfasts at the weekend were cooked to order, although we were advised that items such as tomatoes were unavailable as the hotel had run out!?! Similarly, where tables were used and re-set, side plates, new cups, teaspoons and some pieces of cutlery were continually missed.

We were also required to pay up-front on arrival and as we were aware the hotel was busy and we would not be able to be moved we did not indicate our complaints at the time, however, we will be notifying the hotel separately.

This is a belated review for a stay at the Ewington at the end of September 2006.

Ownership / management of the hotel changed mid 2006 and a substantial refurbishement was underway during the summer and continuing while we were there. The hotel is in a great location on the south side of Glasgow overlooking a large park. Bus and train service to the centre of Glasgow is a very short walk away. Over the past several years we have stayed there once or twice each year so have come to know it well.

Just before our visit the hotel had added to its offering a number of fully furnished two bedroom apartments / flats in a nearby building. We stayed in one of these and were delighted with the whole setup: well furnished, comfortable, quiet, spacious. Plans were afoot to extend the hotel's WiFi network to these apartments as well, but that was not yet in place when we stayed. Breakfast back at the hotel was included in the rate. I would recommend these very highly!

In spite of being very busy (the hotel was sold out for at least part of our stay) the staff were invariably helpful and friendly. It made for a very pleasant stay and we will certainly be back.

  • Liked — The apartments are Wonderful
  • Disliked — Some of the hotel rooms on teh back can be small and noisy

We stayed at the Ewington Hotel for one night in September. The hotel is in a quiet street opposite a very nice park and the building looks attractive.
We had booked a superior room because after reading the reviews we wanted to make sure that we didn’t get one of the unpleasant rooms. When I booked I asked for a room with a view over the park. That wasn’t guaranteed but in the booking confirmation it said that it depended on availability. We didn’t arrive late but our room was at the back of the hotel and didn’t have a view over the park. The room was quite nice and spacious and very clean. The bathroom was all right but the bathtub was scratched and didn’t look too clean. When you turned on the taps the water was brownish and you had to keep it running for some time before it looked clear.
When we returned to the hotel at about 11 o’clock at night there was loud music from a pub or a bar. It stopped at midnight. At about half past six in the morning we got woken up by a loud noise. We hoped it would stop so that we could get some more sleep but it didn’t. When we got up and looked out of the window we realized that we were right next to the ventilation from the kitchen. They had started preparing breakfast and there was no chance that they’d turn the ventilation off within the next hours. We tried watching TV for some time and decided to go down and have breakfast quite early. That turned out to be a good idea. When we came to the breakfast room things were still very relaxed. We got a table at once and didn’t have to queue when we went to the buffet. After about ten minutes things started to get busy. More and more guests came to have breakfast and there were not enough tables for them. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and efficient but they couldn’t cope with the rush. The room got crowded very quickly. Couples and groups of guests were standing next to the buffet waiting for a table. They were sent into the bar to wait until there were some tables vacant. They didn’t look too happy. Every couple of minutes one of them came to the door of the breakfast room to have a look if guests were leaving. That didn’t make you feel like taking your time with the breakfast and lingering over another cup of tea. The breakfast itself was quite good but because of the rush it took a long time before empty dishes or jugs were replenished.

Overall we quite liked the Ewington. It is full of character and quite charming. But a room where you can’t sleep after 6.30 in the morning because of the noise and a bathroom with a scratched bathtub and water that lookes dirty are definitely not superior. If they are in that hotel I wouldn’t want to know what the standard rooms are like. They also have a problem with the breakfast. You don’t feel comfortable when you have to queue for a table or when you know that you have to rush through your breakfast because other guests are waiting for the table. It’s not what I would expect from a good hotel. We would stay there again but we’d insist on a room at the front of the hotel and we’d have breakfast very early.

  • Liked — The building, the spacious room, the park opposite the hotel
  • Disliked — The noise, the quality of the water from the taps, that my room wasn't superior although that was what I had booked
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't take a room at the back of the hotel anywhere near the kitchen! Have breakfast early. Try to book an Early Web Special on the hotel website
