I'll start with the good points: The location of the hotel is one of the best you'll find. I flew from Ireland into Prestwick airport and the train goes from the airport right to the hotel door. No joke. A covered walkway in the airport leads to the train platform and for 2.40 per person you can travel to Glasgow Central Station in 45 mins flat. Once on the platform without stepping outside of the train station, there in front of you is the hotel. Once you step outside the hotel, you are a 2 min walk from the main shopping/eating/drinking streets in Glasgow. Another good point of this hotel was their left luggage facility and the rooms (or at least ours) was newly refurbished. Breakfast was also good with a good variety and since it was a buffet, there was clearly no limit to how much you could eat. Staff were friendly and the sheets on the bed were completely new and fresh and I did have a nice comfortable sleep here.
On the bad side then we have the badly run down public areas in the hotel, the lobby, the stairways, the hallways were all very dated, run down and I'd even go as far as saying that these areas were not sufficiently clean. I will say though, that the hotel did have advertisements in the hallways saying that they were refurbishing the hotel and to bear with them. I got the feeling though that due to their announced refurbishment, they had lost all interest in keeping the existing public areas in the hotel clean and presentable and the general idea was to not "waste" any more money upkeeping its current fixtures since they would soon be replaced.
Another bad point was the bathroom, as I've already mentioned, the bedroom was newly refurbished but the bathroom was still in it's original condition as far as I could see. With dirty looking grouting on the tiles, a shower that pointed directly at your chest instead of over-head and only one light in the corner of this L shaped bathroom made it very dark around the bath and toilet. It was quite difficult when having a shower with the curtain closed to actually see what you were doing because of the fact that there was no window and the only light was in the other side of the L.
The bedroom was a bit small but the building seems to be a bit historic especially considering it is practically part of the train station. I would think that it's possible the hotel is a listed building and therefore they cannot adjust the size/shape of the bedrooms due to preservation orders etc but that's just my own opinion, not fact.
Although the breakfast itself was quite good, there was a queue for the breakfast room when we arrived and we had to wait in a public area for about 15 minutes for a table. The breakfast room was also in need of a good scrubbing and doing-up.
There was some noise to be heard unfortunatley from the street below in the early hours of the morning as it is such a central location I'd forgive the hotel of this sin as I think not even the beautiful Radisson not far away couldn't have avoided this problem either.
We did venture to the gym which seemed to be in the absolute dungeons of the hotel. We didn't end up using it as even the long, narrow hallway which led to it smelt so disgusting and put us off but out of curiosity we continued to at least have a look. The machinery looked new in fairness to them but it was all so crowded with machines with no air conditioning and extremely low ceilings which were yellow and damp looking. The smell in here was enough to turn you right on your heel.
We did attempt to chance eating the hotel carvery but although it was advertised as being served between certain hours, the restaurant seemed to be completely locked up when we went there. We didn't question this with reception though so maybe we were just looking in the wrong place.
Over all I would say, excellent location, good breakfast, pleasant room. Maybe it will be a much more desirable hotel once the refurbishment is carried out. We paid 120 euro for one night Bed and Breakfast in this hotel for 2 people. 60 euro per person seems a bit expensive for the standard of the hotel, but for a nicer hotel for that price I'd say you'd have to go way outside Glasgow and the price and inconvenience of having to travel into the centre would drive the overall price up.
I would recommend this hotel for someone on a very short visit who intends to use the hotel literally as somewhere to sleep rather than somewhere to stay. We literally were only in the hotel the 7 or 8 hours which we slept each night, we spent the rest of the time shopping/eating out/going for drinks/touring around. I wouldn't recommend this as a luxury relaxing break at all. It's a bed for the night in a great location.
