I stayed at this hotel in May 2004 for just under 2 weeks with my mother and sister in a triple room with 3 single beds. This is not the best hotel I've ever stayed at, but not the worst either (although it came pretty close at times)
There were alot of good things about this hotel, the first and foremost being the price. I could not have gotten a better deal if I had tried, and for the price it was an ok place to stay (about GBP60 per night for 3 people). Second, the location is very good as it has an entrance directly into Central Station, and has a Taxi queue on the opposite side of Gordon Street where you can just line up and get a taxi. Word to the wise: make sure you line up, don't try to skip the line unless you're looking for a fight (this goes double late at night) We saw someone try this, and he had about 75 people yelling at him to get to the back of the line, it was great :). Also, it's just a 2 or 3 block walk to the large shopping mall at St. Enoch's, and close to lots of great shopping on Buchannan and Sauchihall Streets. Due to the age of the building it does have a certain Victorian charm, alot of the original fixtures seem to be in place. Nice old-timey heated towel racks in the bathrooms and nice high ceilings, the windows seemed to be original as well. Keep in mind I'm a sucker for old time architecture, most might not be as charmed as I was.
I've told you about the good, now the bad and the ugly. This hotel is OLD. It looks as though it was very beautiful at one time, but that time was long long ago. Many rooms have been renovated, but the shabbiness bleeds through. My sister didn't like the first room we were in and asked the staff to switch us. They were rather obliging although the only available room was in the unrenovated section of the hotel. This is a HUGE building and I felt like I was in 'The Shining' when we were walking to our new room as it was in a relativly uninhabited section of the hotel. It was scary so we went back to our original room. According to my mother, the beds were uncomfortable (I didn't notice as I drink a fair bit and usually slept like the dead after coming in from the pub) The bedspreads and blankets were kind of old and the bedspreads were a little stained (looked like staining from age, not from being unwashed) but the sheets were clean, so I was ok with it. They have a car that will take you to the airport for free if you let them know you need a ride a day or two before. The driver was very nice, quite friendly.
Some of the staff was good, others were apathetic at best. I didn't encounter any staff that were rude, many just didn't seem to care either way. They just seemed to want to get on with their jobs. My biggest complaint was that our bathroom light burned out after our third day there and was not fixed after repeated requests. For a few days it was flickering wildly, so if it was on it was like pottying in a disco, the it burned out completely. At night we just used the light over the sink which was enough to see (but very dim), and we got tired of asking so just let it go. While we were there Glasgow Celtic Football team was in the finals, and I think most of their fans were staying there. Some drunken brawls in the hallways, a few drunks baging on our door late at night thinking it was their room (We just yelled "Wrong room!" and we'd usually get an apology, so they were polite drunks)
This is an ok place to stay if you're on a budget and want to be in a good location in the middle of the city, just don't expect pallacial accomadations or service like you'd get at a four-star New York hotel. All in all a good place to stay if you're just looking for a place to sleep, I would probably only stay here again if I were in the city for Hogmanay because there would probably be some good parties going on :)

I checked in to this hotel last night - the worst hotel i have ever stayed in and i have stayed in a few over the years.

The room was huge but absolutely freezing. I telephoned reception to ask how to switch on the radiator and they said their heating was broken and sent up a tiny heater. As the room was so big this heater helped in no way heat up the room.

The decor is truly awful, old and dirty.

This hotel as I read in a previous review, is like the hotel in the shining. Creepy AND cold.

Stay away.

I booked this hotel for valintines weekend,i looked around a few hotels on line for in and around glasgow but this hotel caught my eye.BIG mistake to my horror the only thing that looked the same as the photos was the outside of the building as for the rest god only knows where they got the photos of the rest of the hotel.20 mins after checking in myself and girlfriend decided we could not stay in thoses conditions so asked to see the manager but was told we could not we,while talking to reception desk another couple had the same problem but no help was avaliable to them either.we checked out and were told no refund was intitled and then spent 4 hours trying to get new hotel but to no avail and had to go home. i could spend time saying how bad this place was but if you dare find out for yourself and ive still not had a sorry from anyone connected to this hotel PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONT GO!!!!!!!!

I was attracted by the idea of fading Victorian grandeur - and thats exactly what I got - having stood in the train station and admired the hotel, it was like a dream come true to get it at a reduced rate for a Hogmanay treat this year.
Unfortunately this is where the dream aspect of the break changed. Our room was huge with a double bed seemingly plonked at ramdom in the middle, when I set by bag on the bed I could see that the withered mattress could just about support it. I could deal with this, however what was most interesting was the bathroom, which was secured behind not one but two doors, I was half expecting to see a bond baddie sitting in the well secured room stroking a white cat - quirkily the second of the double doors locked itself immediately and I was locked in the loo for about 10 minutes behind not one but two doors. Luckliy the view is fantastic, so of all the loos to be locked in this was a good one.
The corridors are long, and have a slight whiff of stale fags, and something I can't quite put a name on - I really don't want to dwell too much on identifying it.
The "leisure centre" is located deep in the bowels of the hotel, at the bottom of a claustrophobic corridor with a bulging ceiling and unsettling knocks and cracks coming from behind unstable looking walls. It was like a pathway into hades, I was so discouraged by it that I didn't actually make it to the leisure centre I just turned and came back.
The breakfast is a free for all, just about marshalled by tired and apathetic staff - granted there was loads of everything, and I can't complain about that, neither can I complain about the quick service at breakfast. The staff generally appear as if they are on the losing side but are friendly, and approachable it just seemed to me that its an ongoing battle keeping the huge rotting building servicable, and they know they are losing.
Overall I wouldn't go back, but am glad I was there - its an experience, the hotel is so central it makes up for a multitude, and you'll be out and about most of the time anyway.

I stayed at the Quality hotel last week and was very happy with my stay even though I stayed in a non-refurbished room. Together with me I had my mother, brother (12 years old), sister (10 years old), and a friend. We were all able to stay in the same room which had 2 double beds and a large rollaway bed.

The price for this room was only £66/night including breakfast for adults. As children stay for free there was a breakfast surcharge of £5,95/child.

The rooms are very spacious and has teamaking facilities in them. The bathroom is also quite big.

However, one of the beds was rather uncomfortable on one side as it had a bump in it. The interior design also left a lot to be desired as there were no paintings and the wall paper was very dull. However, there was absolutely no smell in the room as stated in earlier reviews.

The full authentic buffet style Scottish breakfast was excellent and filled you up for hours. Please note that the breakfast was included in the rate making the room rate a real bargain as breakfast alone for 3 adults would cost £35,85.

There is also a swimming pool and work-out facilities which are free for all guests.

The hotel staff was quite pleasent, letting us check out one hour later than we were supposed to.

I would recommend anybody on a budget to book the Internet room and breakfast rate on the hotel's home page which is about 50% of the full rate.

Please note that my review is based on the fact that I was able to get a very good rate. If only the full rate is available, I certainly would NOT recommend to pay over £100 for a non-refurbished room. In that case go somewhere else.
