I stayed at this hotel in May 2004 for just under 2 weeks with my mother and sister in a triple room with 3 single beds. This is not the best hotel I've ever stayed at, but not the worst either (although it came pretty close at times)
There were alot of good things about this hotel, the first and foremost being the price. I could not have gotten a better deal if I had tried, and for the price it was an ok place to stay (about GBP60 per night for 3 people). Second, the location is very good as it has an entrance directly into Central Station, and has a Taxi queue on the opposite side of Gordon Street where you can just line up and get a taxi. Word to the wise: make sure you line up, don't try to skip the line unless you're looking for a fight (this goes double late at night) We saw someone try this, and he had about 75 people yelling at him to get to the back of the line, it was great :). Also, it's just a 2 or 3 block walk to the large shopping mall at St. Enoch's, and close to lots of great shopping on Buchannan and Sauchihall Streets. Due to the age of the building it does have a certain Victorian charm, alot of the original fixtures seem to be in place. Nice old-timey heated towel racks in the bathrooms and nice high ceilings, the windows seemed to be original as well. Keep in mind I'm a sucker for old time architecture, most might not be as charmed as I was.
I've told you about the good, now the bad and the ugly. This hotel is OLD. It looks as though it was very beautiful at one time, but that time was long long ago. Many rooms have been renovated, but the shabbiness bleeds through. My sister didn't like the first room we were in and asked the staff to switch us. They were rather obliging although the only available room was in the unrenovated section of the hotel. This is a HUGE building and I felt like I was in 'The Shining' when we were walking to our new room as it was in a relativly uninhabited section of the hotel. It was scary so we went back to our original room. According to my mother, the beds were uncomfortable (I didn't notice as I drink a fair bit and usually slept like the dead after coming in from the pub) The bedspreads and blankets were kind of old and the bedspreads were a little stained (looked like staining from age, not from being unwashed) but the sheets were clean, so I was ok with it. They have a car that will take you to the airport for free if you let them know you need a ride a day or two before. The driver was very nice, quite friendly.
Some of the staff was good, others were apathetic at best. I didn't encounter any staff that were rude, many just didn't seem to care either way. They just seemed to want to get on with their jobs. My biggest complaint was that our bathroom light burned out after our third day there and was not fixed after repeated requests. For a few days it was flickering wildly, so if it was on it was like pottying in a disco, the it burned out completely. At night we just used the light over the sink which was enough to see (but very dim), and we got tired of asking so just let it go. While we were there Glasgow Celtic Football team was in the finals, and I think most of their fans were staying there. Some drunken brawls in the hallways, a few drunks baging on our door late at night thinking it was their room (We just yelled "Wrong room!" and we'd usually get an apology, so they were polite drunks)
This is an ok place to stay if you're on a budget and want to be in a good location in the middle of the city, just don't expect pallacial accomadations or service like you'd get at a four-star New York hotel. All in all a good place to stay if you're just looking for a place to sleep, I would probably only stay here again if I were in the city for Hogmanay because there would probably be some good parties going on :)
