This once great hotel is now a run-down and ramshackle heap that Glaswegians should be ashamed of having next to their central Railway station.

Let's start with the lifts, or rather than lack of them. We arrived with luggage and found two out of the three lifts out of action. The remaining operating lift, had its call button missing. So we walked up one flight of the, admittedly impressive, stairs and caught the lift from there. However the lift then didn't stop on the third floor, so we had to leave on the fourth floor and walk down to the third. Although the ground floor button was later fixed, the lift still failed to stop at the third floor. Reading other comments here, I note that the lift problems are longstanding.

Water. Water is a problem. Numerous colleagues complained of coloured water coming from the taps. One described the water as "brackish". Signs are up warning it may take minutes for hot water to reach the sink once taps were on.

Heating. We were using conference facilities and hotel rooms. The conference facilities were cold, the rooms hot. They had to have a loud gas heater blowing to keep the conference hall warm.

Rooms were large enough. I also found my room clean and tidy, and the bathroom was clean. However, the room was distressed, and required a refurbishment.

Food. The breakfast was a rather unappealing buffet cooked affair (fried bread, hash browns, beans, black pudding, bacon etc. ) An evening meal was uniformly criticised by all at our table, particularly some rather tough beef. The lunches were also uninspiring affairs. Eat elsewhere.

The hotel is in a superb location, it redeeming feature is the view into the train station on the first floor. It has an interesting past, with Roy Rodgers, Winston Churchill, and Laurel & Hardy staying there. The internal fittings and ceilings and stairs still betray its past glories, but it is now very run-down and fatigued - like a set from Children of Men.

If you merely want to stay next to the train station and are on a work trip, then you'll probably find it sufficient (but still disappointing). However, if you are on a leisure/romantic trip, don't expect it to dazzle your partner.

The staff were not unfriendly, and are obviously struggling to keep a failing structure, which requires massive investment, operational. Such a shame.

Hotel was booked through work for a meeting. Dear me, what a mistake!

This could be a great hotel - maybe not a St Pancras for Glasgow but, if the right money was spent on it, it would be magnificent, and a real signature building for the centre of Scotland's largest city.

However, the reality is very different. Firstly, I would endorse most of the other comments on this website. This hotel is such a let-down after seeing the external facade. It is cheap, out-dated, damp, cold, tacky, tawdry and simply not good enough for a modern hotel. There was minimal hot water, the cold water was not fit to be drunk and the finishing and electrics in the room seemed to be a bit funny, so I didn't use the TV more than once - anyway, it would have been difficult as the picture was very poor. While I did not see mice I certainly had a strange moment in my bathroom. When I unfurled the shower curtain, along the rusted curtain rail that was set above the bath which had two lovely and large green stains in it, I saw what I though was mould. Until they started moving. I think it was three or four spiders! I really did get the feeling that I went into that bathroom cleaner than when I came out!

In summary, this is the worst hotel I have stayed in. I cannot believe that it is the "same level" as three-star hotels I have stayed in across Europe and in the USA. Two stars would be generous, in my opinion. It is, in my opinion, a disgrace. Not only that, but it could be one of the grandest hotels in Europe if it is ever refurbished properly. That the current owners see fit to offer it as a hotel would suggest that they are happy to collect money from paying guests despite the current state of the building.

In short, avoid.

Where do I start - one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in, and I include the many I stayed in in the former Soviet bloc, and which it most closely represented with its shabby decor and monosyllabic, dour and disinterested staff.
Was forced to stay here when a late flight was cancelled. Was by no means cheap, but the bedclothes were tatty, the room was dirty, the carpets were motheaten and the overall feeling was of a grand old dame who was once beautiful but was now addled and incontinent.
The breakfast was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had - disgusting greasy slop, sun-dried porridge, slabs of fatty tissue passing as sausages - and, to top it all, I was daft enough to think that breakfast might be included in my nearly £100 bill for one night, but was then asked to pay £12 for something I would have enjoyed more if I had found it in a bin outside Glasgow Station.
When I complained about the service, the person I spoke to just looked blank. When I said: "I'm wasting my time, you don't care do you?", she just shrugged her shoulders.
Never, ever stay here - it really is terrible.

Where to begin! Three single girls and one single guy, all great friends travelling all together for the first time...booked a family room at the Quality Central Glasgow for a one night stay before moving on to Edinburgh. We weren´t expecting the 5 star treatment, so the hotel was exactly what we expected, good for the money value. Knew beforehand that some rooms had recently been restored, that the unused 6th and 7th floors had spooky stories and that there was a huge staircase. The hotel is excellently located right in central Glasgow. Unfortunately we arrived around 1 a.m., and our family room had been given away and had to settle for a triple bed room and a single...no supplementary beds left. The rooms were miles away from each other (the hotel is hugggeeeee), and the beautifully restored single room was right next to a run-down, dark and spooky storage room with a creaky open door that made the hairs on our arms stand up on end. The storage room shared a wall with the huge bathroom of the single room and images of Hitchcock´s Pyscho flashed through our minds. Although our friend bravely kept saying that she had no problem with staying alone in the room, through the years we´ve come to know each other all too well, so we could tell she was pooping her pants at the thought..so without a second thought, the rest of us grabbed the heavy matress, pillow and bedsheets and ran like hell´s hounds at our feet about 2 kilometres to our triple room and turned it into a quad. Umm...got caught by several hotel guests the following morning returning the goods. (Photos included!). The triple was great, lots of room, warm bath water, tea and coffee, ironing board and iron and tv. There could´ve been better lighting in the bathroom. I didn´t sleep well as my overactive imagination kept waking me up with imaginary arrivals of turn of the century ghosts..but on the whole we were pleased with our experience. It´s not luxury, but for those who have complaints about this place, I can only say: Wake up and smell the coffee! If you want luxury PAY FOR IT, you stingy whiners! ha ha ha ....
