We stayed one night and were very happy with the hotel. Arrived before check-in time but were able to leave our bags with the porter and use the hotel facilities. Bar staff were excellent and very friendly, prices were good for a hotel. We eventually checked in at 5pm and had two rooms on the 4th floor (very close to one another) one family room and one double. The rooms were clean and reasonably well furnished - all we needed for a night's stay. The bed was comfortable and linen was clean. The bathroom was a bit tired but again was adequeate for our needs. Rooms were quiet even though the hotel is in the city centre; perfect location right at Central Station, ideal for getting to SECC, Hampden, and of course the shops. We stayed on Room Only basis and had breakfast in The Bagel Factory in Central Station (excellent). I feel a bit mean giving the hotel only an average/neutral score as there were no major complaints just a couple of minor things - light bulbs not working, only luke warm water in the shower, no drinking water in the rooms and no bottled water provided, and our friends' room was a bit cold. Parking at Oswald Street NCP Car Park was good value at £5 for 24 hours if ticket validated by the hotel. Didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on the food.

All in all a nice stay, lovely staff, and I would definitely stay there again.

Don't ask me why as I normally check this site before booking
anywhere but unfortunately and with great hindsight I didn't check the review on Tripadvisor before booking this hotel for a business trip. The single room I had was tiny more like a single room in a dorm with no real redeeming features. I had a slight bad back before visiting but the bed was so uncomfortable that it took me 5 minutes to be able to get out of bed every morning! While I had plenty of hot water another delegate I spoke with complained of no hot water. I'm afraid the hotel just seems very dated and I'm not sure it really deserves the 3 star rating it has - having recently stayed in 3 star hotels in the US this really does not compare at all. The building itself is fantastic and the period features are a massive plus point, I had a quick wander through the corridors of the hotel one evening and it did bring to mind The Shining with it's wide corridors. As has been noted previously the hotel has a fantastic history and deserves better, the funding for the re-furb could probably be trebled and then the place would deserve the location. Another plus point and important if you're at a conference for 3 days like I was or even exploring the city is that the buffet breakfast was superb I could have sat there for a couple of hours quite easily!

  • Liked — The features of the building.
  • Disliked — The uncomfortable bed!

I completely understand that this is an old building and a few flaws would be acceptable. However, it seems that maintenance is not being kept up properly. In my room, there was a horrible smell of damp. The handle on the window was broken, and just lying next to the window - no attempt had been made to fix it. The heaters did not work. The wallpaper was hanging off the walls.
The night manager and assistant night manager were rude and inappropriate. When I asked about a heater for the room, the assistant manager actually walked away from me to deal with another customer, telling me they were more important than me!! They agreed to give us a heater for our room. When I asked how long it would be, I was told we would get it when they were ready to bring it! I was absolutely gobsmacked at how unprofessional they were.
On the up side, the day staff were polite, professional and appropriate. I was able to check in at 2pm.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and certainly will not stay there again.

Arrived for a 2 day stay at 3pm to find our room wasn't ready.Got upgraded to a family room for no extra charge. That was the only nice thing about our stay.Corridors leading to our room, were smelly.Paper hanging from walls, dirty carpets and the overpowering smell of "dodgy" cigarettes. The hot water in the bathroom was dirty.Bath was dirty.Air conditioning wasnt working in the room so was really stuffy and the "dodgy" ciggie smell was coming into the room.I complained about all this and got an unsympathetic sorry.I definatly wouldnt stay here again.Rather spend the extra cash and have a nice, clean comfy room futher down the road.

This is really an update. This was once The premier hotel of Glasgow, but fell on hard times and it showed.
It is being renovated at a pace maybe called a bit slow, but quality is improving.
Usually has rooms ready if you come early and call ahead- a real pleasure after an 8 hour flight. Its site claims irport pickup and drop off-does not occur and they should remove this from site.
When you check in if room is not to liking go immediately to desk and ask for another-some rooms are still very poor . Last trip we were sent down a long corridor, and I mean long with steps that made it hard with luggage and corridor was narrow-very. This was on floor five; despite window no real ventilation and very noisy. Got room changed and got a very nice one instead-just be polite at desk as they know there are problems. Walking along corridor rooms looked like a bomb went off on 5th floor or Jack Nicholson took an axe to doors-wife was ready to take an axe to me. But other room was very good.
It is a grand old place and sometime will be again so
I like to support it. Buffet breakfast is superb for any buffet at any hotel, but get it in room price as alone it is $25 itself -way too high. Staff getting much better-this trip was top notch. If you check out planning to come back they will hold excess baggage- a real plus!
If you have history at heart this is a great place-ignore older reviews-this is acceptable to all but anal retentive people and location is best in city-train station for central and south of city is part of hotel itself-no need to go outside and station has a big array of shops. Gregg's bakery next door is world's best! Trains to Edinburgh and north of city are at Queen Street Sttaion - a good 15 minute wlak, but taxi runs $4.25, or if you purchase ticket at Scot Rail section of station here, there is a free bus every 15 minutes to Queen Street.
A good place to stay and even on Frodays which seem to be Weelky Get Drunk dy especially for very noisy teenagers at most hotels this place stay quiet-nyone who has been in Glasgow can tell you yhis is a huge plus as even best of some hotels are horridly npiy weith drunks.
