The hotel boasts of the heritage of architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Unfortunately, apart from a few design features here and there, there is no reason why there should be any association whatsoever with CRM.
To be honest, it's a bit seedy. There's a gap on the outside wall where it's obvious there was once an AA or RAC ratings plaque. We were in the room right at the top of the hotel - a family room. It was a bit gloomy but seemed fine on initial inspection. However, there were cobwebs around the wall; one of the bedcovers had a cigarette burn and the wallpaper was coming off in part - and mismatched in others. The furniture was very old and battered and in the bathroom, apart from grungy grouting, there were no complimentary shampoos or shower gels - just a tiny, horrid smelling bar of soap. The television had no remote control and, hilariously, seemed to be wired up to the porters' TV downstairs because, partway through watching the news channel, we were treated to several minutes of the Sky+ menu before "they" selected their late night programming (!)
But if all that were bearable (and it was, albeit disappointing) the breakfast wasn't. Very little choice apart from the standard "full Scottish". My husband ordered scrambled eggs, as did an American family who had the misfortune to be staying there. We've no idea what he was served but it wasn't scrambled eggs. A very pale yellow, glutinous and inedible. The waitress (who spoke very little English) seemed to know who awful it was, but she never told anyone who ordered it that it was inedible. Several plate loads of the stuff were sent back untouched. Yuck.
The only redeeming quality to the hotel were the reception staff - the night porters were very helpful, seemed to know what they were doing and quite upbeat and at least one of the daytime staff was very friendly. She seemed to know exactly who was who, comings and goings and was extremely efficient dealing with the check outs and welcomes.
But overall, it was a huge disappointment and it's a shame that hotels like this are allowed to continue, giving the industry as a whole such a bad reputation. With a lot of money and a little vision, it could be a fantastic hotel: it's in a great location. But it's far from that at the moment. I couldn't recommend it to anyone.
