My husband and I stayed in the Malmaison Glasgow for one night. It was meant to be three but we shortened it to one because one was enough.
On the day we arrived, when we were brought up to our room, we noticed it was small but it was clean and very modern looking. We did notice that there was no hotel book to give you the ins and outs of the hotel and also that the only breakfast you can order to the room was continental but this didn't concern us at the time. We were in a hurry to meet family so we went to the bar to grab a quick sandwich and head off. The sandwich selection was wasn't verey good and in the end, I had to ask for a plain chicken sandwich (which came on toasted bread, which was slightly burnt). My husband had to wait a little (sorry, a lot) longer for his as there was a mix up with the kitchen but the staff were very apologetic and he did get his drink on the house, which was nice.
On returning that evening, we noticed the room was very warm and the windows didn't open fully (they seem to be restricted to how far they can be opened). There is no air conditioning in the rooms. In the end, because our room was on a busy junction and due to the noise of the traffic, we had to close the windows. Closing the windows made no difference to the noise, which kept us awake and only made the room warmer. (If you're claustrophobic or asthmatic, definitely don't stay in this hotel). Also, there is some internal mechanical noise vibrating through the hotel (which sounds like the noise of an air conditioning unit but isn't) and it vibrates loudly through the building the entire time (very noticeable in your room at night this noise). This also kept us awake. The doors to the rooms tend to slam behind you when you go in and out so this can really lift you out of it with the fright at night.
The next morning, after no sleep due to all of this noise, my husband phoned reception and asked could we change our room and said we'd pay the extra for an upgrade. Reception were very apologetic and said they would change our room for us while we were out for the day. We went out and about Glasgow for a couple of hours and on our return, (around 1ish) our new room wasn't ready, which we accepted and just headed to the bar to wait. It was nearly 2 o'clock by the time we got our new room (positioned beside the service elevator) which was smaller, much, much warmer, the vibrating noise was much more noticeable in this room and again we couldn't open the windows due to fact they are restricted to how far they open. This room was also situated on a side of the hotel that is on a busy noisy road. In the end, in the sweltering heat of the room, we gave up and just rang around a few hotels to find somewhere else to stay and we moved hotels. The front office manager did try to convince us to stay and showed us another room at the back of the hotel which was much quieter and was also the side of the hotel that hadn't any mechanical noise running through it. Question - Why weren't we given this room in the first place? I was too tired at this stage to care. It was now 3pm in the afternoon on my 2nd day in Glasgow and half of it had been wasted on hotels. The front office manager did ask us to come back to their hotel again and they'd look after us. All in all though, very disappointing.
