The staff at this hotel are lovely and are very helpful and friendly.
I have stayed several times before, and would probably again.
The rooms are ok for a 4 star hotel and provide all the expected facilities, such as TV, Iron, Hairdryer, minibar, toiletries etc...my room did smell of smoke even though it was supposed to be non smoking.
Its within reasonable walking distance of the railways stations, bars, shops and restaurants.
The Breakfast was good with plenty of choice..
so really couldn't fault the hotel, apart from its maybe in need of a re decor.

Our sons and daughters-in-law very kindly bought us a weekend break here as a Christmas present ! So you see, what goes around does (eventually) come around !! We could, however, have chosen a better, weather-wise weekend ; as we left Central Station to walk the few blocks (uphill) to the Malmaison, the rain lashed down in biblical proportions, and the west wind howled.
Thankfully, the staff at reception welcomed us warmly and the room (on the 4th floor) was a delightful haven. Thereafter, we dodged the clouds, the occasional showers, and the bitingly-cold wind and had a great weekend of drifting around, enjoying a varied mix of cultural sights, great food and meeting interesting characters - safe in the knowledge that the Malmaison was always there to fall back on and in which to recover.
A very comfortable room ; excellent, prompt service when required ; each request or enquiry greeted with a cheerful smile and a positive response / outcome. What more could you ask for ?
Thanks, kids - and the whole Team at the Malmaison. Loved it !!

  • Liked — Very helpful staff Team.
  • Disliked — Late night revellers (outside) can be a nuisance

Stayed for one night (26th/27th Dec 07). Staff were Extremely Helpful, Room was of a reasonable size with all the amenities you would expect from a 4* hotel including tea coffee making (with ground coffee), minibar (reasonable prices for a hotel) Iron, Flatscreen satellite tv, cable for Internet, french windows+ others. Bathroom was compact but fitted to a high standard/ good water pressure; Only small complaints were - bar not busy/closed early (understandable, City was quiet due to dates there and the Internet connection seemed to be fault in our room (staff ere very helpful and as was only staying 1 night was not worth spending much time on). Would recommend to others, especially at the heavily discounted price we paid (again probably due to dates, but hotels website does also have offers)

  • Liked — Location, Room Interior & Champaigne!
  • Disliked — broken internet bah!

Some may say faded grandeur but its more a case of gothic overload. Could have hit 'character' but overdid it and hit 'too dark'. Dim lighting makes you wonder what they are hiding - and what you could see is peeling and chipped paintwork. Needs a re-do. Restaurant OK for romantic but since that doesn't represent the majority clientele it doesn't work. Staff were mostly helpful and friendly if not very organised. Service slow and unpredictable. Food varied from lovely to ugh. I had to return a "steak" that was entirely sinew and fat!! They should find a new source. Some very nice touches helped raise this. Toiletries are wonderful and the sign tells you to take them - a really nice touch but lighting doesn't consider a woman who wants to put on make-up!! Again too dark. Quilts and beds are soft but somehow felt like sleeping in plastic and experience was 'sweaty'. Is the mattress plastic covered? Would stay again if they put in more lights - particularly in the bedroom/bathroom and management sorted out the inconsistency in the restaurant. Hint - a single woman does not necessarily want to be seated in a dark hidden corner in the restaurant!!!

  • Liked — Toiletries and location
  • Disliked — Lack of lighting and inconsistent quality of food

Booked a weekend away at short notice in celebration of my wife's new job. Fantastic deal of under £50 per head for half board.

Directions to the hotel were clear and concise, reception staff were polite and helpful regarding luggage and parking. The parking was on street but there were bags of spaces and it is free overnight and on a Sunday and then only £3-50 per day at the weekend in a local muti storey. The room had a fabulous bed but was very warm and necessitated a precarious scramble onto a high window sill to open the window to make it bearable.

The dinner included in the price was from the table d'hote menu and included a bottle of wine between us and not just a glass each. Very tasty, very fresh. Service was good with the staff being always there but not overpowering.

Breakfast was disappointing, the hot food took ages to come and was not that impressive in terms of taste or quantity. Cold selection was adequate, service was poor from uninterested staff. Sorry but you need to employ some more or better trained waiting staff.

The bill (or 'the damage' as Malmaison put it) was initially wrong but was sorted out by couteous and apologetic reception staff without any fuss or argument. The front of house staff were superb.

In short, great hotel, fab location close to the centre but not right in amongst the action, courteous staff but the restaraunt needs a bit if tweaking. Fantastic value.
