This hotel was a delight throughout. We stayed here for four nights' midweek, on a trip to enjoy the city's galleries and museums. After a long and tiring train journey we were greeted by an offer of an upgrade and a 'dram' whilst we waited a few minutes for our room.
The hotel has grown out of a short terrace of large Victorian family houses that have gradually been internally connected to make the present beautifully decorated and well laid out hotel. Our room was large, comfortably furnished, with a large bathroom in luxurious 'modern victorian' style. The room was at the top of the part of the hotel that had been the residence of Sir William Burrell (of the Burrell Collection fame). The hotel has recently reinstalled the striking stained glass window originally commissioned by him for the main staircase on the way to our room.
We had specified a rear room as one of us had stayed in the hotel before and been woken by emergency vehicle sirens from the Great Western Road at the front. This time we were on the top floor at the rear with a view over a quiet part of the city.
The next day, the breakfast was as excellent and pleasantly served as you would expect. We did not have a car but the buses to the city centre from outside are very frequent indeed. And it was easy to get a taxi back.
The hotel is also within walking distance, through pleasant streets, of the university and Kelvinside galleries.
We dined two nights in the hotel. It was a good menu with some unusual taste combinations that worked. One night we were rather let down by a seemingly untrained member of staff introduced to us as the sommelier. But on the second night, the sommelier on duty was a very helpful and professional Canadian with an excellent knowledge of the wines he was serving and what would fit the tastes we wanted.
A place thoroughly worth a stay.
