This hotel is so close to being perfect, we stayed for two nights between Xmas & New Year in a fairly large party, had a few small niggles, but if they were sorted the Hotel Du Vin would go from being in 3rd place on Tripadvisor to being clearly in the lead.
I notice that a few other comments have brought up the heat in the hotel, I have to say that this caused an issue with me, the central heating could certainly do with turning down a little, we turned the room radiators down as soon as we got in, also opened a few windows slightly, we obviously did not have this benefit in the lounges and other circulation rooms however.
Comments have been made about the wait for food and/or service in the restaurant, we found for our 1st breakfast we had two slices of toast (halved) between six of us, several reminders and around 20 minutes later we did have some more presented. Our 2nd breakfast however the same lovely restaurant manager presented us with more than enough pretty much immediately. Both breakfasts were beautifully presented, cooked very well etc.
The lightness in the rooms did cause an issue for some of our party, personally I liked the warmth and homeliness this gave.
We also found that when it came to plugging stuff in there was a shortage of available sockets, I found that the Bose system had a faulty speaker or was cross-wired, if it was anything other than quiet there was a crackle coming from one side rather than bass - a minor point - the fact there was a music system was great!
When we arrived, we'd flown up and one of our party, well into his eighties in a mobility scooter was obviously shattered and needed a rest. We asked when their room would be ready and were told it would be 4pm (the normal check-in time). Several others were however given the opportunity to check in some time before this though - perhaps just the luck of the draw.
The hotel is made up of 5 beautiful town houses, this could confuse some people if they climbed the wrong staircase, but the reception (with a staircase) is in the middle and there are two sets both left and right, it is really rather straightforward.
We ate there both the evenings the 1st was in the Bistro, and can honestly say was absolutely fantastic (the other was the wedding meal - also of a high standard).
The hotel was very clean, beautifully furnished, the staff were very helpful, friendly and professional (other than the issue regarding room checking in). Having also stayed in other Hotel Du Vin's we found the rooms much bigger, better equipped (full range of toiletries, food and drink, Bose sound systems and Nespresso coffee machines etc etc) and very comfortable beds.
