I stayed at Hotel Du Vin recently with work using the excellent internet rate to get an extremely good price for a five star hotel. Although we arrived quite late at about midnight, we had a warm welcome from the concierge and were offered a "wee dram" before being shown to our room. The hotel sits over five house so can feel like a bit of a warren, but it was also like a nice magical mystery tour as we discovered new parts of the hotel throughout our stay. Highlights were a variety of magazines in the room, the lovely toiletries and massive bathroom with underfloor heating, not to mention the cookies which appeared by the bed both nights before going to bed.
Breakfast in the room was a nice continental breakfast with a lovely fresh fruit compote and freshly squeezed apple juice as well as the naughtier treats of a variety of pastries. The second evening when we had been out for dinner with friends we were escorted back to the whisky snug where a member of staff catered to all of our preferences and also took into account the fact we were on a budget! The thing I liked most about the hotel was that even though it obviously catered to much better off people than us, the staff were always extremely friendly and helpful and didnt look down on you the way people in five star hotels sometimes can. My only slight complaint was that the rooms were over-heated, very unusual in rooms those size!
