We stayed at 1 DG for 2 nights before heading off on our honeymoon, and would higly recommend it to anyone.

The hotel is made up of a number of terraced houses - which interconnect on the first floor. The decoration is all in keeping with the style of the house, and there are gorgeous stained glass windows at each staircase.

The room was fabulous - massive bed, plasma TV, Bose sound system, with a bathroom as big as some Glasgow hotel rooms (Grosvenor Hilton, you know who you are). Fabulous fluffy robes, toiletries, furnishings, the lot. Extremely comfy bed, and very quiet room, despite overlooking Great Western Road.

Breakfast - a good buffet of cold foods, with an interesting menu of hot food. I loved being able to order a roll and sausage. It was delicious, too. My husband had the eggs and salmon one day, and full Scottish the next. We didn't get a chance to use the restaurant, but would certainly try it next time.

The hotel location is great - a pleasant stroll from Glasgow's west end, with all the restaurants there. Taxi into the centre of Glasgow was reasonably priced.

Ok, it's a little more expensive than the Hiltons or Radisson - but it was definitely worth it. And there are touches and attention to detail - free internet access for my laptop, eg, and foam bath for the gorgeous roll top bath. There's even a cigar cabin in the garden.

Downsides - if I must nit pick, the staff seem to use the landing in each inerconnecting building to sort magazines, and tick off which rooms have been done, etc, so it's rarely empty in the morning. Also, the 'fitness room' in the basement doesn't even have a treadmill. But very minor points!

Just back from a weekend stay at this hotel and can honestly say it was one of the best weekend breaks we have had. Had heard lots of good reviews of '1DG' so thought we should give it a go as well. From the warm welcome, free dram at reception to being escorted to our room every aspect of this hotel had quality written all over it. We had booked a classic room and the room itself was massive with a separate dressing/sitting area with the impressive bathroom off it. The room had everything you would need in it and the decor was just right for the period it was trying to reflect. Both of us agreed that the bed was probably the comfiest and largest bed we have both had the pleasure to sleep it! Breakfast was equally impressive with both hot or cold options to chose from. Staff at all times were friendly, courteous and could not have offered to do more for you.

Personally I think where '1DG' succeeds is that is has got the boutique hotel experience just right. Too many other hotels try to attempt this but on a larger scale thus loosing what they are actually trying to accomplish. We will return!

Just returned from a three day break at this hotel. We stayed in a Grand Room, because it was the best room available when we booked but we would have preferred a suite. In saying that, for a room it was very large (and sizeable to some of the "suites" in London hotels), with a big four poster and large windows. We were at the front of the hotel and did not find any noise from the main road a problem at all. The bed was comfortable enough, the furniture was also good and the living flame gas fire was a nice romantic touch in the room. I found our room particularly dark, decorated in dark woods and black flocked fabrics. Very baronial but a bit oppressive in it's darkness. This kind of decor is very popular in Scottish hotels, particularly those converted victorian houses and townhouses like this one. Am sure it would be a hit with tourists, but it is commonly found in cheaper guest houses without this price tag so we didn't find it to be particularly spectacular.

Between the fire and the in room thermostat it was easy for us to control the temperature of the room without being freezing which was good. The black marble bathroom was okay, but again very dark with no window or natural light and lighting provided made it impossible for good make-up application or shaving.

Breakfast was fantastic and possible the best selection in any 5* hotel I have stayed in to date so top marks for that. The minibar was well-stocked and had some interesting additions like organic chocolate which we appreciated in detail. Tea and coffee making facilities were also of a high standard with freshly ground coffee and caffetiere available. Room service meals were also of a good standard.

Staff were friendly and efficient and unimposing, but attention to detail was not as high as some other hotels in the same class. However, the room rates are reasonable and we had an enjoyable stay and definitely got value for money. I would not rush to go back to the hotel purely because it didn't make any outstanding impression on me other than satisfactory really, so would probably prefer to try somewhere different.

  • Liked — The size of the room
  • Disliked — darkness of room and lack of light in bathroom

I arrived on business very late at night, almost midnight.

I was warmly welcomed by staff and checked in by the roaring fire I was given the Geoff Merril room,

When I opened the door I couldn't wipe the smile from my face, HUGE bed, HUGE plasma TV, large corner sofa a HUGE roll top bath in the room area near the TV

The bathroom had a double shower with a rainforest shower, full size toiletries, candles and matches by the bath

Lots of lovely teas and coffees complete with a French press.

The attention to detail was faultless, the fresh milk in the fridge for example and a golf club and golf ball with a little machine that spits the ball back out at you when you have potted it (is that the correct terminology?)

No expense had been spared it was quality all the way, I only wish I'd have had more time to play before my meeting it was bliss.

I'm going back and plan to take my husband, that bed was too big without him : )

A number of years ago, my wife and I came to the conclusion that given the few number of nights we stay in hotels, we may as well pamper ourselves in outstanding hotels. This hotel handily lived up to that standard of excellence. From the moment we checked in, the service was amazing. All the staff we came across welcomed us from their hearts. We have stayed in many wonderful hotels in the last few years and I must say this may be the best of the best for service. The rooms were gorgeous and spacious and the decorating fit for revovated Victorian homes. The bed was very comfortable. Our bathroom was massive and beautiful. We very much appreciated the welcome Single Malt as well as the daily biscuits. We'd be back in a heartbeat.

The only challenge was the hotel doesn't have air conditioning so when it got a bit hot, one had to open windows. Those windows faced one of Glasgow's busiest roads...so we had to choose between a room that was a bit too warm vs traffic noise.

  • Liked — The service, the room quality and the beautiful buildings
  • Disliked — A bit noisy from road traffic when windows are open
