We had been planning our wedding for some time and it was now time to get our hotel sorted. We initially looked a very well known Glasgow hotel, twas indeed lovely, but the prices were absolutely crazy. They were charging almost £500 for a family room, per night!!! I don’t mind spending money, especially on my wedding, but I do object to being ripped off and this was a rip off. Anyway, I digress; this is not a review of that hotel.
So, I turned to Trip Advisor and there listed as the top B&B was 15 Glasgow. I hadn’t considered the B&B category before but as I will explain in this review, 15 Glasgow is technically a B&B, but also a world class hotel run by one of the best in the hospitality industry in Scotland and the UK.
Laura is the chatelaine of 15 Glasgow and showed us around on our first visit to see if it would be suitable to house visiting mums and dads and brothers and sisters.
We…fell…head…over…heels…in…love with the place as soon as we stepped inside. Grand Georgian columns, mosaic floors, high ceilings, stained glass windows…this was an amazing find. Palatial is the word I would use to describe it.
Laura was very friendly and welcoming and answered all our questions and we had made up our minds there and then that we wanted to stay here.
15, despite its large and grand interior, has just 5 bedrooms, but these are not your average hotel bedrooms. We chose the “Drawing room” for my bride to stay in the night before her wedding, a few days before and after also. This was the biggest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. A huge room, probably bigger than our entire house! We would put our sisters family of four in the “Tower” suite, another huge room. And the other three rooms could house our bridesmaids and mums and dads.
Each room is so tastefully decorated. Wall colours, carpets, floors, bed linen all compliment each other perfectly. All the rooms seem to have brand new bathrooms, all brand new fixtures and fittings, very generously sized bathrooms, some with monsoon showers, some with stand alone baths. Laura and her husband really have a great eye and are experts in design and decoration. But in addition to that…they are the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. I had a party of 14 people arriving and wanted to feed and water them before we headed off to the wedding rehearsal. No problem. Laura could accommodate us and could provide afternoon tea for us all. I love afternoon tea. So civilised. But it’s easy to get it wrong. The wrong scones, cheap ones from Tesco could ruin it. Sometimes there’s not much cake in the selection and you need a bit of cake don’t you? I needn’t have worried and I didn’t. I left it all to Laura and she exceeded my expectations. She actually baked everything herself! No shop bought scones or pastries. The whole family got their aprons on and baked a spread that not only was delicious, but proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that these guys are in a class of their own. (If you “Like” the 15 Glasgow Facebook page, you can see photos of their baking).
Our entire wedding party, all from Ireland, were so impressed by their 15 experience. From the breakfasts, to the bedrooms, to the interiors, to the location, to the peace and quiet. When I book a hotel, a very important thing for me, possibly the most important, is the noise level. I want peace and quiet. I don’t want any thudding music, I don’t want doors banging, and I don’t want street noise. 15 Glasgow is a peaceful paradise in a world where peace and quiet are increasingly hard to find.
The day of the wedding came and half our guests (about 30 people who had flown in for the occasion) were going to meet at 15 to board a coach to take them to the church. Rather than just getting straight on the coach, I wanted to show off this fantastic place and thought that a champagne reception would have been lovely. I put the idea to Laura and on the day, we had the beautiful champagne reception in the large main room. Everyone was looked after very well with Laura and her staff pouring the champers and keeping everyone topped up and happy. She made sure that everyone got on the bus safely and readied the place for the bride to leave afterwards.
These guys will go well beyond the service you usually receive anywhere else. If there is something you want, just ask them! We hired all five rooms and they not only looked after us as hotel guests, but baked an afternoon tea and looked after 30+ guests at a champagne reception as well. If it’s breakfast in bed you want or maybe you want 20 people to have breakfast together at the same table, no problem. Laura of course, looked after my bride brilliantly too, from bringing up a tray of chilled champagne and glasses to her room on her wedding morning to helping carry her train as she ran to the limousine in the pouring Glasgow summer rain.
Laura and 15 were the only one of all our wedding suppliers who I didn’t have to worry about.
15 Glasgow is THE hotel to stay at in Glasgow.
