“Value, Location, Hospitality and Gerry the Cook!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

We found ourselves in Glasgow without reservation and were quickly connected to this B & B by the tourist help desk at the airport! You simply take the #500 city bus just outside the airport door and it will drop you off two blocks from Adelaides. We were exhausted as we just arrived from the states. The staff quickly took our bags and introduced us to Gerry who cooked us a full scottish breakfast for 5 BPS and then surprise us with a clean room that hey had quickly cleaned while we ate -- no wait! Our room was up several levels and they took pity on tired guests and carried our bags up. Our room was clean, simply furnished, spacious. The front desk is like having your best friend available to show you around. Upon inquiring about dinner we were sent to the Butterfly and the Pig where we had a fantastic edperience! See that review seperately! We continued on to Edinburgh to see the Military Tatoo but we were so glad that we saw Glasgow first! What great hospitality in this lovely City!! And, Gerry, thank you so very kindly, we will always remember your friendly smile warm handshake and bright scarf around your neck, as well as your good cooking!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with w big windows, but ask which floor

This B&B was definitely better compared to hotel

Pros:
- fair location, 10-15 minutes walk to city center
- they suggested a free upgrade from single no-bathroom to double en-suite room
- extremely helpful staff: helped me book a tour, helped with local phone calls to find a room when they were fully booked, etc.
- they allowed me to check out (very) late at no additional cost
- Wifi in the room (fair signal strength)
- you can use their in the lobby computer (except at late night)
- cosy lobby

Cons:
- location could have been more central, but it's not a big deal to walk 10-15 min

We booked one night with Adelaide's, mostly because we wanted to be centrally located so that we could go to the Ubiquitous Chip (renewing an acquaintance we made 31 years ago; still a great place to eat).
Indeed, Adelaide's was a quick trip from the Queen Street train station, where we had arrived from Skye, so minimal taxi fees, and also was a reasonable cab ride to the Chip for supper, so the location was pretty good. The entrance was right on a busy downtown street. Children were playing at the day care place just below street level (associated with Adelaide's), but of course they went home at the end of the day, so there was no issue with noise from them at night.
We had a room several flights up, but the young woman checking us in was very helpful with getting the luggage up to the rooms--no lift, so if you have a problem with stairs, look elsewhere, because the breakfast room is on the lower level, so you won't be able to avoid it, one way or the other.
The staff were very friendly and very nice, which helped to offset the somewhat tired appearance of the place, especially in our room. It had everything necessary, but everything seemed just a bit worn, from the bedding to the bathroom. The grouting around the tub/shower in the bathroom seriously needed some attention, as it looked like it had been installed by someone's young cousin, and it was suspiciously black in some places. Also, the tub was big and deep, so caution was needed in stepping in and out. But in general the bathroom seemed clean, and had enough soaps and towels.
The room was a bit dark, with no windows but a skylight above, which might have been nice except for the huge bird dropping splattered across it. I'm sure that's not easy to clean, but it was a bit, well, distracting.
There was a TV, mounted close to the bed so a bit awkward to view, a cabinet for hanging clothes, and a basic tray with tea/coffee preparations on a small desk.
In the morning, you have a choice of a "continental" breakfast, with options for toast, cereal, fruits, juice, coffee, tea, etc., or you can pay an additional small amount for a "full" breakfast with eggs, meat, etc. Everything seemed fine, if somewhat average--the potato "tattie" scones were very thin and not as tasty as we had when we stayed in B&Bs. But it was all hot and cooked to taste by a very friendly chef, who came out to take our orders.
The breakfast room looked a bit "collegiate" with a number of basic tables, drink machines, etc. We had a very pleasant conversation with a woman from Arizona who talked about her son having taken up the bagpipe after they brought him to see the military tatto in Edinburgh (funny to think about an Arizona kid playing the bagpipe!).
They also have a computer available in the lobby, which was handy for printing airline tickets.
The price (less than 80 pounds), seemed reasonable for what we had.
The staff were also very helpful with calling for taxies for supper and for the trip to the airport the next morning. They were definitely the highly of the place!

Room Tip: If you don't have a problem with stairs, choose a room on a higher level for a quieter stay.

Adelaides Guest House is very well located given it is 10 minutes walk from the train station, shopping centres, shops, etc. Rooms are very well equipped and cheap. The only disadvange is that breakfast is very simple, although good.

Ted, Lisa, and Rory are unbeatable when it comes to going the extra mile to help with local directions, tips on how best to get from one location to another, retrieving shoes lost on the bus, sharing where to get a good bargain, lugging too heavy luggage up the stairs....and just everything and anything else you need. So friendly! Rooms are clean, well stocked. Continental breakfast was great. Gerry made a delicious full proper Scottish breakfast to order. The location puts you close to both train stations and City Centre. Ted's sense of humour launched our arrival and served as a special goodbye. He's masterful at creating a lively introduction to other guests so there's a feeling of camaraderie yet without forcing any more than a cheerful hello. Been coming here since 2001 and it never disappoints.

Room Tip: if you don't want to deal with lots of steps rooms 2 and 3 in lower level back are quiet and the...

As mentioned by others, Ted, the host at Adelaides, is a gem -- couldn't have made us feel more welcome and comfortable. Adelaides is really well located for access to central Galsgow, with many bus stops near-by to get to other areas of the city. Our room was clean and large, with a large ensuite, so we were quite comfortable, but the building as a whole needs to be refreshed. The concept of this home-away-from-home is unique and wonderful, and I hope they are able to refurbish it soon so that it remains a great alternative to staying in a hotel in Glasgow.

Location is excellent, very convenient for Glasgow School of Art and all attractions - walking everywhere easy. Very safe and quiet. Friendly welcome. Rooms spacious, very clean and comfortable, particularly beds. This is not a glossy place, décor and furnishings are simple, but it provides all you need. Gerry the breakfast chef is really friendly and breakfast is good. would definitely stay here again. Excellent value for money and supporting an excellent social project. We were in a very top floor double at the back and I am a very light sleeper and not bothered by noise.
