“Best curry in St Andrews”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

The food at Balaka is a real treasure. The menu offers page after page of different dishes, and each that I have sampled has been incredibly flavourful and generous.

However, I must say that the best part about this place is their wonderful student deal. For £8.95, it is possible to get three courses, choosing from a smaller (but still extensive) selection of starters and entrees with naan, rice and a lovely ice-cream dessert included. You'll have to ask for the student menu, and they often pull the deal during special event times or certain days during the week (Sunday? Saturday?), but so long as you come at the right time, it's an excellent deal.

The main drawback here is the service. It can be quite disorganized, especially on busy nights! Be sure to ask for the check in advance, as this can take up to 20 minutes to get sorted if you're unlucky. Other than this small flaw, I would highly recommend Balaka!

“Enjoyable curry with lots to choose from”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

As a group of 8 we were seated in the private dining room which appeared more of an access corridor adjacent to the main restaurant.
Extensive menu and good service for a Saturday evening. Suggest you ring ahead to book if you are a group.
Definitely something for all here.

“Lucky Find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

Went there on a Saturday tea-time. No problem getting a seat although the Lammas Fair was on. The staff were extremely pleasant and gave us a lovely corner seat. The food was excellent Hubby had the Tandoor prawns for main, they were whoppers!! and I had the mixed seafood platter which was simply delicious! I would recommend Balaka to anyone who loves authentic Indian cuisine

“Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

We chose from the set evening meal at £9.95 per head comprising a starter, main course and tea or coffee. Onion Bhajis were good but the chicken Pakora was overly crisp and a bit frugal with only 3 small pieces of chicken. The Lamb Pathia lacked that sweet and sour kick (6 out of 10) whilst the Chicken Chilli Masala fared better (9). Pilau rice was unusual with we think coconut added and the garlic Baan was average. Reasonable food but good price over all made for a very good rating overall.

“Superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

Went to the Balaka restaurant in St Andrews today to have lunch. They have a very good 3 course lunch menu ranging from £5.95 to £7.95 depending which one you have. My wife and I had the lunch from the £5.95 menu as it had the Madras on this one.
The taste and quality of the meal was nothing short of superb. The starter of garlic chicken wings are to die for. The service was top notch and very friendly and quick.
This is a must go to restaurant.
