“Perfect Stay in St. Andrews!”
I've never written a review before but this wonderful establishment deserves it. Brownlees Guest House is a Victorian Townhouse located on Murray Place in St. Andrews just a half a block from The Scores (shore road) and around the corner from the clubhouse of The Royal and Ancient. Since I planned to play golf--perfect. Simply put, Brownlees Guest House is the nicest moderately-priced (about 35 GBP pp) bed and breakfast I have ever stayed in (and I've stayed in dozens). First, the owners of Brownlees, Jacqueline and Trevor Trangmar, both recently retired from service in the Royal Air Force, could not be more friendly, engaging, or accommodating. Absolutely delightful and one regret I had was not being able to spend more time with them. Both were brimming with information on the St. Andrews area in general and golf courses (and local golf politics!) in particular. They were a great help. The establishment itself--I'm just a guy so I don't know all the correct terms--has the best, newest, and highest quality furniture, appointments, and,er, bathroom facilities I have ever enjoyed in a moderately priced bed and breakfast--from the beds, desk, lamps, shower--you name it. Not unimportantly, the modern window (installed inside the older, double-hung window) provided wonderful noise isolation when I wanted that. (I'm not saying it was a noisy street---just that when I wanted perfect quiet I was able to have it and that was great.) The breakfast side of things was no less enjoyable. I'm a haggis and black pudding kind of guy and was happy to see both were available (in addition to the rest of the full Scottish breakfast items). And there is always fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and milk available in the breakfast room should an appetite arrive at a non-breakfast houe. Excellent. Further, for you golfers out there, there is storage space for golf clubs so you do not have to keep them in your car or in your room. Well, that will have to do. I'll just end this by saying I that I couldn't recommend Brownlees and Jacqueline and Trevor more highly and I'll stay with them again when I return to St. Andrews.
