We've just returned from a weekend break at this lovely guesthouse in St Andrews. The friendly welcome started with a call on the day we were due to arrive, and finished with a long chat with Roberta and her assistant over breakfast on our last day!

We found the rooms smallish, but had been advised there were larger rooms available at extra cost when we'd originally booked, which I believe is fair. There are 7 rooms over 3 floors, so we had the top floor to ourselves (our friends, another couple, in the other room). The bathrooms are spacious and well stocked with plentiful towels and Arran toiletries. It was a gloriously warm weekend & unlike the previous review, there was no problem keeping the windows open. It's a great location, and not noisy even over a World Cup weekend with plenty of fun in the town. Within a 5 minute walk, you can be in the heart of St Andrews town or on the Old Course for golf or a beautiful walk, with plenty of choice of restaurants/bars nearby.

The breakfasts were superb ranging from lovely porridge with fresh strawberries, to a great version of a full Scottish breakfast..generous helping of yoghurt, fresh fruit, and jugs of orange juice...fresh coffee was plentiful & we loved sitting with other guests at the long breakfast table & hearing their plans for the day (including the brave skydiver..!).

The other couple we travelled with are smokers (remember, Scotland now has a smoking ban in public places!) but Roberta has a covered patio leading out to a stunning back garden & made our guests feel welcome with nothing too much trouble. We often too a cup of coffee out last thing at night or early in the morning, with no fuss. The front lounge was well-stocked with golf-mags and daily papers..but to be honest there was so much to do & see that this was just an added bonus.

We've definitely found a great home-from-home, and look forward to returning soon. Thanks for a wonderful weeked!
Ps..If you're tempted have a look at their website, which we think is a fair reflection of the real thing!

We had a wonderful one-night stay here in St Andrews. You couldn't get a better location, just around the corner from the Old Course. There wasn't parking available directly in front of the hotel, but there was free public parking less than a block away.

We had no complaints about this B&B at all. We found Roberta very helpful in directing us around town and breakfast was fantastic!

I would recommend this place to anyone I know.

“Not the best place for a golf group, but upscale and clean”

We stayed at 5 Pilmour Place during an extended golf trip in 2004. We were booked there by our golf travel agent for three nights. I would highly reccommend this B&B for couples, singles, newleyweds or even the 2 couple golf trip. However, they are not prepared for your typical 6-8 male golf group. (Or maybe they now are after we left). We arrived very late the first night(after 11pm) due to playing all day at Troon and busing over afterwards.
Roberta was not a happy camper. She wasn't keen on the amount of golf equipment and luggage being brought into the foyer as this noise apparently was disturbing to the other guests there. Hey, this is a golf group, tired and ready for bed, plus we were a bit late.

The rooms are very clean and updated for St. Andrews, but if you are not familiar with Scottish accomodations, very small and somewhat cramped. But this is the norm, so don't expect different. The weather was very nice that week, butl a bit warm, and she was not happy with us for opening the windows(The music from the conservatory or school next door was nice however).

Remember, this is a family affair and you share the space at times with the children.
breakfast was good, but not available until around 7:-7:30am, late if you have an early tee time.Lack of ice was another factor, don't plan on filling up a cooler, unless you go out and buy it yourself.

Again, she was not too keen on us using the dining room for a late night card game, but that room is the only option. Just like my ex, she wanted to make sure it was cleaned up and properly set for the morning, so we may have kept her up later than normal.

She actually asked us to leave after the first night, but that was impossible as our schedule was set up fairly tight the next couple of days. I think she did ask the booking agent to move us, but could not arrange this. We were a group of guys on a golf trip, for pete's sake. We don't go to bed until late, get up early, play golf all day, have a nice meal and a few cocktails, play cards or hit a pub or two, then do it all over again the next day.

Anyway, I think I saw a big smile on her face when we pulled away the last morning, but there was no harm done to the home.

Again, I would highly reccommend the place for a traveling couple or two, singles, or even a few golfers who like to go to bed early and are more civilized that our group. Our guys still have a little life in us, enjoy it to the max and can afford to step out a little. Next time we will stay at the Dunvegan(they have a great bar and is owned by a Texas transplant)!

“A Great Find”

I stayed at Pilmour Place for 2 nights and I wasn’t sure just how it would measure up to the blurb and the pictures on the website.......but I can assure you it does.
If you are a golfer, this is a perfect place to stay as the Old Course is just round the corner.
And even if you're not a golfer, everything is just round the corner anyway.
Roberta, the owner was extremely friendly and welcoming and clearly adored by the other guests staying the same time we were.
The breakfasts are excellent and plentiful and will keep you going all day. You can mix and match from the menu as well so feel free to ask for any combination you want, nothing is too much trouble.
The only reason I did not give this 5 stars was because there were a few niggly things that perhaps could have been slightly better but these are extremely minor issues, which did not really impact that much on my stay - but I do believe there is always room for improvement.
The bedroom we stayed in was a bit cramped even though it had a king size bed. We couldn’t open the wardrobe doors properly and had to squeeze past a small gap between it and the bed to get to other side of the room. Also, there was no space in the room for a chair and we had to sit on the bed at all times which was a bit of a pain. However, I would simply pay for a bigger room next time, it would be worth the extra money.
There was only 1 electrical socket/shaver socket quite near the mirror in the room - not so good if your appliance has an average length lead.
The power shower wasn’t that powerful but perhaps this was because we were on the top floor....but it worked.
Also, the extensive CD library turned out to be a few CD's, some of them freebies from newspapers, so bring your own music. The DVD selection was rather good though but to be honest, you will be out enjoying St Andrews so much you wont have time to watch any.
As I say these are only minor issues and I would go back again in a heartbeat.
We ate at the Pilmour Hotel next door and this does excellent bar meals for around 6 pounds per main course. There is a crepe bar in the hotel on the corner we were recommended but we never had the time to try them so will make a point of this next time round.
This is definitely an above average B&B in St Andrews. Many of the other B&B's on offer are traditional but this one is rather modern and very clean.
The Old Course Hotel may be nice and luxurious but its just a bit further out the town so this place is worth it for the surroundings and more central location. I have recommended this place to friends and family!

Have just returned from our second visit to this delightful guest house. This time we treated ourselves to the best room in the house and it was certainly worth it ! The room was spacious, beautifully decorated with lots of extra touches like the rolled top bath and choices of bath oils. The whole place exudes an atmosphere of friendliness and hospitality. Breakfasts are wonderful with lots of choice of local fresh produce. If you want to stay in the centre of Saint Andrews you couldn't make a better choice.
