“Embarrassing Experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2010

Dear Mr. Storey,

I thought you should know that my experience at your hotel in Dubai was fantastic even thought we just had dinner at the Exchange Grill and after getting absolutely glowing recommendations from both my customers and friends I thought it would be a great idea to surprise my girlfriend with a stay at Fairmont St. Andrews.

This was a special occasion for her and so when I told her how awesome Fairmont Hotels were from both my personal experince and recommendations, she was very excited so she made the booking.

I am afraid from here on the experince just got worse:

When we made the reservstion my girlfriend's name and she was also a vegetariian and we were assured that there was plenty of vegetarian options. So after we checked in (That was another poor experince which I will address later) we decide to have lunch at Kittocks and there was one vegetarian option on the menu. So thinking this was a luxury resort we were confident the chefs were able to whip up something....so they did: I looked like stir fry noodles you can buy from a corner shop with a few green and red peppers thrown in for colour. You have to understand this is me wanting to treat my girlfriend to lunch and when she eventually broke down in tears I had to get her something to eat and wait for it had to be a bowl of fries....shocking. Maureen the concierge did try her best trying to convince Elizabeth that there were plenty of options and it was the usual salads etc etc.
Getting back to the check in: We did request an early checkin and then being told our room wasn't availbel at 3pm. The receptionist mispelt her name on the reservation and also the email address that was taken to confirm the reservation was incorrect. For the duration of our stay we were address and Mr & Mrs and this was unacepable.
In the room we realised the following morning there were no teaspoons or stirrers for the coffee, the shower was cold and there was was July 2010 copy of a newsletter on the office desk (even though it was now the 6th August) and funny enough there was some doodle notes on the back of the newsletter.
Daniel at housekeeping was quick and effient enough to get this all sorted but from a "First Impression" point of view this I would expect in a budget hotel
Max the executive housekeeper did phone to apologise and did arrange a tray of chocolates to be sent to our and and inviation to enjoy an "Enhanced Breakfast Experience" at the 2 AA Rosette Esparanza restaurant.

That unfortunately did not win us over and after checking out and waiting for the mini bus to take us to town, she starting crying again....I really know how to treat my lady.

Regards

Jody

This is a hotel that I've had on my wishlist for a while.... so 3 kids later my husband and I finally have an opportunity to get away for a well deserved 24hours off! So what did we think ...

Pre-Arrival - We contacted reservations advising that this was a special occasion and requested a nice room. Helpfully the reservations desk advised that they would upgrade us if a room was a available - that sounded promising !

Arrival - When you drive up you have the option to drive to the front of the hotel where you can unload your luggage and entrust the concierge service to drive your car off and park it in the car park. We chose to park ourselves and walk the short distance. On arrival at the front door we received a lovely meet and greet service with our luggage spirited away luggage trolley. It felt special and fitting for a 5 star.

Checkin - Quick and effecient but no mention of our upgrade or special celebration ! A standard double room it was to be !

Rooms - A Standar Double. Very Clean. Nice comfortable furnishing with massive double bed, lovely big TV, Desk, and relaxing chair. Although being a Business Traveller it just felt the same as any other hotel and lacked that wow factor for me. The bathroom clean and functional. Limited toiletry luxuries so if you opt to leave shampoo, cond and shower gel at home then you'll run out after the first person has been in there !! Bath Robes nice feature. Hair Dryer was melted at the nozzle... ! All in all I liked it but didnt love it,.

Leisure Facillities - On the lower floor. The Gym was adequate and running machines and bikes have on-screen entertainment. Bring your headphones to plug in to enjoy. We didn't know about this and I watched without sound - not quite the same effect. The pool is nice and has a swim lane and childrens leisure section. The changing rooms are clean and functional - the lockers are a challenge though ! All in all OK but wow factor missing for us.

Restaurants - We opted to eat in St Andrews. Breakfast however was great and plenty of options from cereals, porridge, cooked, pancakes etc, Staff lovely and really helpful. Think this was the first time I saw the 5 star value !!

Car Parking - For us a disaster. Someone scraped our car on either the parking or exiting from the space next to us. This highlighted the following issues that could easily be addressed 1. There is no CCTV - so choose your space in a well lit area or in spot less likely to inflict you with issue 2. There is no record taken at reception of your Reg no so if you leave your lights on, or your car is blaring its alarm or someone steals it then you'll only find out the next day when you go to get it !! So really it would be better if the hotel (5 *) would take some resp here. The other major concern for me is safety if its dark, and your a female alone then there are some risks when it is dimly let and not offering any safety recording etc.

Overall- Nice but not Wow. Glimpses of 5 star on immediate arrival from the concierge and at breakfast. We would go back with children for a break but not for a special weekend for 2. Car park turned out to be our big issue but thats prob a small % for most.

Although neither of us are golfers, we were looking for a special treat and our experience at Fairmont St Andrews was nothing short of perfect. From the outset, we were simply spoiled!

The valet parking is a treat as is the delivery of luggage to your room. We had two nights in an amazing Executive Suite - beautifully appointed with a super kingsize bed, luxury bed linen, flat screen TVs in the bedroom and lounge, a 6 seater dining suite, fire, luxury bathroom, cloakroom, etc. Also, we had stunning views from an equally stunning suite. Great views across the course and the sea.

We were so lucky to have fantastic weather for our stay. St Andrews itself is only a short drive from the hotel and, although parking can be difficult, it is worth making the effort. We had a lovely stroll through the ruins of the cathedral.

Staff are both unobtrusive but overly helpful. How do they manage to do that?!

We dined in the Kittocks Den one evening but didn't experience the other restaurants for dinner. Breakfast was a treat - good selection of options including cereals, fruit, pastries, cooked fare, etc. There is also an Omelette Bar for cooked to order omelettes.

I didn't experience the leisure facilities but my boyfriend did enjoy the swimming pool. Good size, good facilities, etc.

We genuinely didn't want to leave and look forward to our next visit.

Stayed at the Manor Homes for our annual friendly house party. Accommodation is of the highest standard: spacious and spotless. Pays to arrive early to bag the biggest bedroom which boasts a deep bathtub. Beds are super kingside with deliciously comfortable mattresses and luxurious bedding. Living accommodation is well equipped and the iPod/iPhone dock and Bose surround sound an added bonus. Hotel facilities equally impressive and some of our party were full of praise for the standard and quality of the golf courses. Overall looking forward to next year already.

One night simply wasn't enough. From the check in to check out the service and standard of the hotel was faultless. All staff were friendly and gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble for them, special note here to Claudia at reception. The King Suite we had booked was beautifully appointed and presented, and we found all areas of the hotel spotlessly clean. The Spa, was as relaxing as it should be, and both our evening meal and breakfast the following day, were of the highest quality. Full marks all around, looking forward to going back.

The Fairmont is a huge Spa hotel around 3 miles outside St Andrews. It is marketed as a luxury family Spa Hotel but also as a golfer's paradise so there was a large international range of guests when we stayed. The hotel is huge and can resemble an airport but is much more comfortable with different areas to eat and relax. The Spa was included in our pretty reasonable B&B package but the treatments were expensive. There are two links courses attached to the hotel which were very busy when we stayed.

We had sea-view rooms which were luxurious and comfortable. We can recommend the bar meals and breakfasts. The main impressive feature of this hotel was the very friendly and helpful staff. They really did make the stay memorable. The hotel has a regular shuttle bus to and from St Andrews and the driver often went out of his way to help. It does not really matter that the hotel is out of town, however it would be lovely if there was a path to St Andrews as their is no pavement along the road. I suspect that is largely out of the hands of the Fairmont and I gladly recommend this hotel.

We had a fantastic stay here with our 12 year old son this October holiday.
The hotel is amazing well kept clean and so family friendly, all the staff were lovely and would help you with what ever you asked them.
Room was large and clean.
Only hiccup was the buffet menu price for children.
Children age 6 years old to 12 years £6.99 and 12 years old to 16 years £9.99, problem was a child of age 12 falls into both price ranges in which the staff did reilise but didn't understand why, so beware if you have a 12 year old clarify with waiter how much you will be paying for child in this age bracket. As they just charge you the higher price of the two.
Apart from this a fantastic hotel in which we will be going back at easter break.
