“Splendid rural seaside golf hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2011

I stayed here for my graduation and the service was very nice. The suites are unusually large and the decor decidedly Scottish. They have a nice life-size chess board in the garden. The restaurant has fine service and is set in a large atrium which can feel a little cavernous. The golf course and the seaside are spectacular and close to both the fantastic town of st andrews (you need a car) and the award winning beach of kingsbarns where i used to take my dogs for walks when i lived in town.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Fairmont. The hotel is set within lovely grounds (i.e. 2 golf courses) and benefits from some stunning views of the sea and St. Andrews in the distance. Courtesy mini buses offer an easy way of getting into St. Andrews.
Our room was a deluxe King Size double on the 3rd floor. It was a fantastic room; very spacious, a massive bathroom with both a bath and a shower – all spotless and nice smelling ‘Le Labo’ toiletries. The room also had a lovely view of the clubhouse in the distance and the sea. The only down point (and this goes for other hotels as well) is that you had to pay £18 per day for an internet connection which is a bit much when you’re paying several hundred pounds for the room. The choice of TV channels is very obviously catering towards their US visitors; also there was a lack of radio channels only BBC Radio 2 and BBC Scotland – we like BBC Radio 1 and 4. No face cloths were left on the second day but were very quickly brought to the room after requesting them.
We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night. The restaurant is very badly lit and made it impossible to read the menu without straining the eyes. Our starters were up to standard – Smoked Mackerel Pate and Thai Fishcakes. The main courses were disappointing – my duck was overdone and must have been on a hunger strike if the portion size was indicative – my wife’s Coley was again small and the fish was again overcooked and the chorizo was burnt. I very rarely go for dessert but due to still being hungry, I went for the cheese board and my wife had the collection of tartlets; my cheeses were all very similar (e.g. no blue cheese in sight) and had just come out of the fridge so the brie was like rubber!; my wife’s dessert was very ordinary and did not fit the description as presented on the menu.
Serving staff were friendly and attentive but the restaurant, being a partitioned off space in a bigger space was without character.
Our first breakfast was also very disappointing – the cooked breakfast was poor; watery scrambled egg, sausages and bacon that were not browned off, poor quality haggis and black pudding. The overall choice of breakfast foods was good i.e. cereals, cold bar, omelette/cooked eggs station, breads, fruit and yoghurt.
Our second breakfast was much better as we avoided the cooked breakfast. I wish I could make poached eggs like the chef, the selection of cold meats and smoked fish was good as was the selection of different breads, rolls, fruit, yoghurts & porridge. The maple syrup was real and NOT just flavoured.
Avoid drinking in the hotel bars. It may be part and parcel of staying in a 5 star hotel but drinks at more than £5 need to be extraordinary and need an extraordinary setting – this hotel provides neither!

Overall, there were some things that lived up to the 5 star billing but the hotel is let down by the standard of some of the food and the lifelessness of the public spaces in the hotel. For any golf fans, I can recommend the Torrance Course and make sure you visit some of the villages/small towns along the Fife coast road.

Room Tip: Surrounded my greenery. Avoid any rooms that look inward - one side looks to the coast the other 2 l...

I have stayed in this hotel several times and have not been disappointed. In fact I would say that the staff were even more friendly, welcoming and helpful than previous occasions.
We booked through hotel connexions and got a very reasonable price for B + B.
The rooms are spacious and well decorated, but the bed was a bit soft for us. The spa facilities are lovely and Amanda one of the receptionists was very helpful.
We had the buffet breakfast, with plenty to choose from. We did not dine in the restaurant this time, although previous experiences have been good. My only criticism of the dining area is that some of the atmosphere is lost because of the high ceiling and open space.
There is an hourly courtesy bus from the hotel to and from St Andrews. James one of the porters (and who drives the bus) is so cheery. The bus stops at 6pm, but you can always get the number 95 bus back later at night which stops outside the hotel, (but it is a bit of a walk down the drive)!
We visited the clubhouse which overlooks the sea and were even offered a lift there and back! (but we declined). This also serves food if you fancy a change. There are 2 golf courses at the hotel to choose from.
I will definitely return to this hotel again and continue to recommend it to others,

I have stayed & reviewed this hotel before but having just come back from another 2 day break felt I should update it. Had a nice welcome & car unloaded & valet parked as usual. Nice greeting from very friendly resident dog - Smudge. Checked in very quickly & efficiently.
The hotel was very quiet & that was with a few deals on. Ours included £25 each towards dinner on one evening, only 1 bar & 1 restaurant open due to lack of residents. The meal was lovely - pumpkin risotto - delicious & our waiter, William, very friendly & courteous. Wine was expensive but lager reasonable. Used the pool & the gym - nice to have them mainly to ourselves but the gym could do with an extensive clean especially the skirting & carpets. Staff were all lovely. Room was very clean but underfloor heating in the bathroom appears to have been switched off. Would definitely go back.

I was given this trip by my husband for our first anniversary and we were not disappointed.
It was 6th December and very cold so we stayed in the hotel all night. when we arrived we walked in the foyer it took our breath away. It was beautifully decorated with Christmas trees and lights. there was a 50ft tree in the middle of the atrium which was stunning. Check in was easy and we went to our room which was very big, luxurious and beautiful. the bathroom was amazing with a huge bath and double shower. We went down and used the spa facilities which were allele more basic than i thought they would be but still good. We then relaxed in our room with coffee and wine and booked our table in the Esperante restraunt. the restraunt was lovely and they had prepared us a stunning table on the balcony looking on to the atrium. the meal was perfect, caesar salad and crab cakes to start, steak and duck for main and coffee and sticky toffee pudding to finish, yummm! We left there nd sat in the Kittock Bar, we had had the hole hotel to our self practically which was so romantic.
breakfast was also out of this world, the was cereal, full cooked, and an omelette bar. I had the bacon and pancakes with syrup.
check out was easy but we learned after that you can bring dogs which i would have loved but just one of thoes things.
only bad thing was the iron left a black mark on an expensive shirt and the coffee wasn't great at breakfast and the tea in the room was horibble but we really can't complain.
exellent stay!

Thank you for sharing your comments regarding your stay and we are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. It was disappointing to learn of the mark that was caused by the iron in our guest room. It would be greatly appreciated if you could contact me personally so I could gather some further details regarding your shirt. Finally, we are reviewing our tea offering in the restaurant and guest rooms to ensure guest satisfaction. We look forward to welcoming you back to Fairmont St. Andrews in the near future.
