“We have already booked to return next year!”

Cambo House, Cambo Estate

A weekend away was just what we needed. We booked a last minute stay in the Lower Servants apartment. Having never been before we were amazed at what we found. It’s so much better than it looks on the website.

Cambo is beautiful. Its a big old house set in what seems to be the middle of the countryside but just 15 minutes from St Andrews. There were nice gardens and walks down to the beach. You can even walk round the golf course. The kids loved the swings and the trampoline. It is a great location for visiting all the local attractions. We even nipped to Dundee to the Sensation Centre. The kids loved it. The good weather helped too.

The apartment was even better than we expected. It was very well equipped - not that we did much cooking! We ate out most nights (we will definitely need to go back because we couldn't get a table at the Seafood restaurant in St Andrews) but as a result of this we had a really nice dinner specially prepared for us in the private dinning room at Cambo House. Had we known that we could do this we would have booked this for each evening and saved ourselves a fortune.

We have booked one of the bigger apartments for next year so that we can take our parents with us. Can’t wait!

The only thing I would recommend to anyone staying is that you need a car if you want to visit other places. The drive down to the house is over a mile.

We had a lovely time at Cambo. My wife and I stayed in the yellow room which is a vast room with a magnificent four poster bed. The interior of the house is very authentic victorian.

The grounds are very quiet and contain a sandy beach and tennis courts. I would thoroughly recommend Cambo as a lovely place to stay for couples if you want a short break . It feels miles away from the city.

Lovely Grounds and surroundings, shabby gentility, basic room facilities and low key hospitality and reception. First impressions not helped by my dog being injured in close encounter with a black lab which attacked on him stairs on arrival and no hot water available in " West Wing". Rooms large with no en-suites, so be prepared to walk the halls, take a robe or you will scare the other guests.

I would also in retrospective enquire carefully what you get for 4 course delux dinner costing £60.00 , Cava, melon or tart , lamb and cheesecake or raspberrys plus half bottle of solid spanish red did not seen good value for money. Despite the impressive surroundings , don't bother with Dinner Jacket , Polish waitress in jeans worked hard for her money. Landlady has interesting way of engaging with guests and introducing noise ground rules when you are relaxing, late evening, somewhat inappropriate and impolite to my senstive ears.

We were however in good humoured company and so are well disposed to forgive all because of the experience of staying in such a place in fine weather. We enjoyed the local scenery and excellent walk on beach. I am sure they can only get better if they listen to feedback and engage early with their vistors.

The Cambo Estate is a lovely place to temporarily reside. The location is lovely. The grounds are lovely. The service was mediocre at best, but the owners were away at the time. They have since given us a discount due to our bad experience which includes being switched between 3 rooms, lack of heating, lack of hot water and all at 11:00pm after we returned from dinner. Having said that, the rooms were old but charming. One can feel like a member of royalty in this large stately home. I would recommend staying at the Cambo Estate as long as the owners are present!

“Special holiday at Cambo Estate”

Cambo House, Cambo Estate

Jun 26, 2007

We had an extremely enjoyable time staying in Mid Cottage on Cambo Estate. We loved the freedom of self catering and stayed 11 days in May 2007. The cottage was very homely and well appointed with all we needed to make our stay relaxing. The staff are so friendly and helpful and Peter and Catherine Erskine are very gracious hosts. Drinks in the drawing room at Cambo House made us feel very special in such an historic home that is beautifully decorated with incredible antiques and such rich family history.
The purpose of our visit was to see our son who lives nearby and after we visited Ireland for a week we returned to Cambo House in early June and stayed two nights in the Blue Room B&B. What an experience! An enormous room in a very private wing of the house that has to be experienced to fully understand how magnificient it really is. My husband and I would certainly return to Cambo Estate whenever we visit Scotland.
