“Faultless”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

I travelled by myself for nearly 8 hours to go to St Andrews University Open Day, and stayed in this hotel for one night. The receptionist was extremely helpful when I first arrived, and the location of the hotel is bang in the centre of town - a few minutes walk to pubs, shops, cafes etc. My room was extremely comfortable, with a lovely double bed and ensuite.

The best part of the hotel, however, has to be the fantastic restaurant/bar. I had a spectacular dinner (sea bass is a must) - Conor and Hayley were amazingly friendly and attentive. Breakfast the next morning was equally brilliant - within minutes of arriving I had been given coffee and toast, and it only took five minutes for my yummy breakfast to arrive. All in all, a wonderful stay - I look forward to coming back in the future.

Stayed last week in room 22 , 1st impressions is room is great then we had no hot water followed by the shower either being freezing cold or scalding hot.My room mate was a plumber so diagnosed faulty mixer setting, complained about hot water from basin to be told it had worked for previous guests.2nd day no water complained again, went to play golf had shave in links clubhouse.got back from golf still no hot water from taps despite plumbing going in to fix whilst we were out.3rd day still no water and we were told to to run the taps so we did for 30 mins guess what still no hot water.Taps are fiited with flow restrictors to minimise water usage ,running for 30 mins defeats their purpose somewhat. complained to the desk and asked for a discount off the room.checked out Saturday bill not reduced despite the girl on the desk saying she would note with the manager.
Also the heating does not come on to 4pm and must go off through the night as we woke up freezing.SO don't return to your room till after 4
We booked a golf package and we have been coming for the last 10 years and we tried the hotel as a change.very disappointed with stay.wont use again
Hotel has great location and the food was good , but if you can't be warm and have no hot water for a shave then its pretty poor.
Come on Ardgowan no excuse for not providing heat and hot water

Thank you for your comments, we do appreciate all feedback. We feel some comments made are not entirely accurate and would like to run through each point below.

The first night you reported to reception that there was no hot water. On investigating this matter we discovered there to be hot water in the sink, bath and also the shower. At this stage you had not brought to our attention the issue with the shower temperature control. Since there appeared to be no issue we presumed the matter to be solved.

The following morning on the way to breakfast you reported to reception that again there was no hot water in the sink, the receptionist at the time apologised and offered you the bathroom in the room next door to use. At this point you also brought to our attention the shower temperature control. The receptionist contacted the plumber immediately who had the shower fixed by the time you had finished breakfast.

The taps on the sinks do not have flow restrictors to save water and on investigation it takes less than 2 minutes to bring up hot water from the tank. Unfortunately since this is an old building the tank is not next to the bathrooms for that floor.

The heating is on a timer to come on at the points in the day which would most benefit our guests. Any guest who checks in early or comes back early just needs to ask and we boost the heating. I’m sorry that this was an issue during the stay and if it had been brought to our attention we would have been more than happy to solve it for you.

If you wish to contact us to discuss these matters further please do not hesitate to contact us.

Room was a good size bit bin hadnt been emptied from previous guest and bathroom could have been cleaned a bit nore also. Breakfast was an area adjacent to the hotel so had to go outside to enter this but obce in couldnt fault the food and the staff at all. Parking was ok but it could be difficult in summer when busier!

Thank you for your review, guest feedback is very important to us.

I’m glad to hear that you found the staff throughout the hotel helpful, and that you enjoyed your breakfast with us. Our reception which we were have redesigned at the time of your stay is now finished so we are now no longer in our temporary reception which was set up.

I can only apologise that the bin was not emptied, housekeeping must have missed this when doing their checks. We do clean all the rooms to a very high standard so I will investigate this with housekeeping.

If a room is booked in our annexe check in, out and also breakfast is in the Ardgowan Hotel which is stated at the booking stage.

Kind Regards,

Gary Foster

I was in St Andrews on business and was travelling alone, so I booked the above. Everything about the booking and the hotel was first class. All the staff where very friendly and made me feel very welcome. the room was a good size, clean and tidy. Dinner in the restaurant was some of the best I have eaten in hotels, freshly cooked and served quickly. Would I stay in this hotel again, ? Would I recommend this hotel ? Yes I would :-) One word from the wise, Don't get a taxi from the train station, pre book one or catch the bus £12.00 for a 5 minute journey and it wasn't a limo, just an old Nissan which smelt of Fags.

Thank you very much for your review of the hotel, it is always so nice to hear our guests have enjoyed their stay with us. We are very proud of both the hotel and restaurant which we are continually trying to improve(we have just finished our new reception). We are just about to launch our new spring menu in the restaurant so if you do get the opportunity to stay again you will have a new menu to choose from!

Just back from a 2 night stay at the Ardgowan and would thoroughly recommend it. The staff were lovely, really helpful and friendly. Rooms had just had a make-over and were very comfortable - even a good powerful shower! We enjoyed dinner on the Friday night and decided to try somewhere else on the Saturday - so much choice but do book early. We had great difficulty finding somewhere by the afternoon.
A wee bit difficult to find parking near the hotel but it is there if you are patient and keep looking. Good situation for shops and beach. Hoping to return next year.

My sister and her boyfriend, and my mother and I stayed at the Ardgowan hotel last night. We arrived at about 12, knowing we couldn't check in until 2. However, the lady at reception dismissed that and went to check that our rooms were ready and the heating was on (it was snowing outside!) and let us in early. The rooms were lovely and homely, and the breakfast was great, with brilliant service by smiling staff. We couldn't fault the staff at all - they all went out of their way for us, and were bright and cheerful the whole time.

Would recommend it to anyone staying in St Andrews.

The hotel has good location in St Andrews, a short stroll to the Golf Courses or Town. We had a room overlooking the garden at the rear of the property which was comfortable enough but the bathroom was tiny. Hotel staff were pleasant and friendly.

We took the three night package which included dinner. Athough we could not fault the food or the service there were several items not available from the menu.

Overall excellent stay and we wouldnt hesitate to go back to the Ardgown the next time we are back in St Andrews.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our hotel and our restaurant Playfair's.

I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and the dinner you had with us whilst making use of our 3 for 2 stay offer.

I would like to apologise for the couple of items that we had run out of on the night of your meal. We spoke to our Head Chef and he had ordered in the usual amont of stock for a busy Saturday night. The night you had dined was particularly busy and certain items on the menu and our Chef's specials seemed to be more popular than usual early on in the evening.

If you do stay with us again please don't hesitate to speak to the waiting staff and request for them to put menu items on hold for you if there is something in particular you fancy.

We hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel at some point in the future.

Kind Regards,
