“Pretty much spot on”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2013

Although this is a pretty big resort style hotel with a traditional air about it, it somehow manages at the same time to feel intimate, friendly, modern and informal. This is probably mainly due to the staff, who are uniformly delightful - always polite, attentive, helpful and efficient.

We booked two interconnecting rooms for a family of 5, which worked very well. The rooms were plenty big enough for us all, with great views over the golf course and on to the sea. They were both spotlessly clean and well equipped, with free internet (although patchy wireless in one room, but a minor niggle). The most surprising thing was how quiet they were, with little noise finding its way in, despite there being a couple of big pre-Christmas functions on during our stay.

The food was very good, with excellent breakfasts. We had a very good meal in the main restaurant, some of us having the superb tasting menu. The pool and spa were lovely, with the rooftop hot-tub, which we had to ourselves under the stars, being a particular hit.

The hotel is easy to find, with good parking and an easy 10 minute stroll into town, St Andrews being one of the loveliest places to visit in Scotland.

Room Tip: The details on the website are pretty clear about what you get for your money, based on size and vie...

I had been looking forward to visiting the Old Course Hotel for a while - Other Half takes part in golf competitions in St Andrews twice a year and we have always stayed in Carnoustie or at the Fairmont. I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. The location, by the golf course and beach, is lovely; the staff welcoming and efficient; the decor is quite attractive if a little non-specific but the major part of any hotel stay for us is the food. We attended a 20s themed dinner in the evening and, after great first impressions with the black/red/white decorated dining room, were quite taken aback at the average standard of food. Starter of smoked salmon cheesecake was the best course at 'OK', but the pollock was overcooked and the dry and tasteless trifle came presented as yet another cheesecake rather than in a bowl or dish.

Worst of all was breakfast the following morning. I opted for a cooked breakfast from the buffet - big mistake. Everything was overcooked which was unforgivable, especially as the sausages were really good quality pork and herb. The hash browns were almost unrecognisable as such, being more akin to facial exfoliating pads. The scrambled eggs had so much milk in they were more like custard and everything was totally devoid of flavour. What little I did eat sat like lead in my stomach all day. If the cooks (I refuse to call them chefs) want to know how to do a good buffet breakfast they should go to the Fairmont. We had a spectacular breakfast there for 3 consecutive mornings and that was when the kitchen was out of commission as it was being refurbished!

Reading through Tripadvisor reviews for the Old Course Hotel, the majority of complaints seem to be about the food and restaurant service. It is a great shame that they don't seem to learn from customer input. I very much get the impression that they are resting on their laurels and catering largely for the American tourist market. Next time we return to St Andrews we'll be heading back to the Fairmont.

We checked in for a 4 night stay yesterday and the hotel is everything we expected. Extremely friendly staff, incredibly cozy, luxurious rooms - the breakfast was absolutely outstanding. It's a little too chilly to play golf but there is a nice walk into town alongside the 18th green just outside the hotel. I'd highly recommend a stay here if you are visiting St Andrews

2 night weekend break here. Absolutely brilliant from the moment we parked the car. Rooms fantastic and Roaring Twenties party night on Friday was so good. Lovely meal and a good disco. Evening passed by too quickly.
Fantastic breakfast and staff really attentive but not overbearing.

We stayed here for one night because of a short visit to Scotland.
Booked a standard room which was very nice. Excellent breakfast like in other LHW.
The views from the hotel over the famous golfcourse are amazing and maybe the best we ever saw. We were very lucky with the weather!! The quality of the food in the restaurant (only 1 was open at the time of our visit) extremely good.
We were a bit disappointed with the small portions. We ordered from the a la carte Menu but the crabsalad was a children's portion and not easy to taste the crab.
Also the sole-although very good quality- but soooo small. No vegetables or didn't we see or taste it!
Soufflé-again small- but wonderful! But.......thanks to the bread we didn't go to bed hungry!

Room Tip: You pay a lot more for a seaview room. We had a room above and next to the entrance which was spacio...

We had a lovely stay here recently, the hotel itself is beautiful and has some wonderful views. We stayed in a standard room which was great, had a sea view as well which was lovely.

The spa was nice, the outdoor hot tub was amazing, even though it was about -2 degrees outside!!

Staff were absolutely wonderful, and couldn't do enough for us, they were very professional and I have to say the service was absolutely first class.

If I could afford it I'd be back regularly, but it'll maybe just be a special treat for us!!! St. Andrews is lovely to have a walk about too and see the sights.

As usual this hotel was excellent the staff are very good and are very helpful.

I must admit what really brings us back to this hotel is the spa and swimming pools areas
they are fantastic so relaxing and where in scotland can you sit in an outside jacuzzi in November. The last time we were here we had to get a fob to access certain areas of the spa but on this occasion you can use everything without using the fob.

Our room this time faced the park area and had a balcony (of sorts) which was shared with the room next door, not the best if you don't know the neighbours. The bed was very comfortable
but I did not sleep well as the pillows were to soft for me, maybe I could of requested a different pillow but by the time I went to bed it was to late

We had dinner at the hotel which we enjoyed but my only comment was the menu needs to be changed or more special dishes should be on offer .

We had breakfast in the hotel and we all felt that it seemed not as good as previous experiences I asked for a herbal tea and was given a pot of tea no one gave me a choice and I still do not know what kind of tea I had, eggs benedict were overcooked - all in all not the usual breakfast service.

Will we be back - Yes
