“What an amazing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

What a fantastic hotel. From the moment we arrived we were blown away. It's the small things that make a difference. This was a treat for my birthday and my husband had upgraded us to a room with a fantastic view of the golf course. We were shown to our room by David the concierge who when he found out it was my birthday he arranged to have canopies and champagne sent to the room before dinner and this came with a birthday card from the staff. Throughout the stay we were called by our names which was a lovely touch. We went to the jigger inn for our meal they moved us to a bigger table and staff here were just as brilliant as all the others. Views from the road hole bar were fab, and we also loved the gym and spa. Can't wait to go back again and again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 244 fantastic views and lovely and quiet.

We have just spent the weekend in the Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews and it was fantastic! We arrived to the sounds of bagpipes being played by a Piper in traditional attire. The concierge met us with a warm smile and cheery hello. We were booked in and then given a glass of sparkling wine which we took to our room. I am not going to tell you which room we stayed in because it was an absolute gem and I want to keep it as my secret for next time. All I will say is when you book ask for "an Eden room (the basic room at £250 B&B per night) next to the lifts". You won't be disappointed trust me. The staff throughout the whole hotel are fantastic! They are always smiling and give a warm welcome where ever you are. My husband and I go to this hotel for an absolute relaxing experience. We don't play golf and are not interested in golf. But that's the best thing about the hotel - it doesn't matter. The Spa is heavenly. There is a swimming pool with waterfall at the end, the Thermal pools with lots of bubbles, hot and cold water experience and a water jet that blasts away all tension and stress. The steam room and sauna and not forgetting the fffrrreeezzziinngg plunge pool! Lastly you simply must use the rooftop jacuzzi! It's the most wonderful experience, sat in hot bubbles with the rain coming down. Great fun! Onto food now, ladies take lots of loose dresses that way it won't matter how much food you eat! The Steaks in Sands Grill are wonderful. In the Road Hole Resturant for breakfast you can chose items from the menu - but beware they are at an extra cost - or you can have the Scottish buffet breakfast - which is included in the price of B&B. Fresh fruit, muffins and pastries, cereals, fruit juices and then the hot buffet breakfast. Eat as little or as much as you want. Fantastic! Scrambled egg is standard but you can have the chef cook you fresh eggs however you want them. The view over the golf course and beach is a wonderful site whether it's good weather or not. You must have a walk along the beach it's very bracing and blows away the cobwebs. To finish all I can say is BOOK this hotel now.....you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for an Eden room next to the lifts.

This is our 3rd visit to this hotel, but our first 'toddler free'. Once again the Old Course surpassed our expectations. We arrived before our check-in time and had a delicious lunch at the Jigger Inn before a smooth and quick check-in. We stayed in a Old Course Suite which was beautiful with lovely views over the course and beyond. A welcome back card from the Manager had been placed in our room which was a lovely touch.

This is the first time we had been able to take advantage of spa treatments and they were wonderful. The best back massage I think I've ever had! The hydrotherapy suite and roof-top Jacuzzi are amazing.

We had drink in the Role Hole Bar before eating in the Road Hole restaurant and everything was amazing - service, wine, meals, coffee....we couldn't have asked for more.

Breakfast was plentiful and very good with coffee and toast brought to our table quickly.

If you are trying to decide which room to go for, we've now stayed in an Old Course Suite, Fairway Suite and Deluxe Suite. The Old Course Suite was my husbands favourite (traditional and sumptuous) while I preferred the Fairway Suite (spacious and modern). I suppose it just depends what you like.....Please note however that the Old Course Suites are one room partially separated by a wall to divide the living space from the bedroom, whereas the Fairway Suites are 2 separate rooms. Something I feel is important if you are travelling with children.

We stayed here for my husband's 50th. From the moment we arrived with our 3 children we felt at home. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the bathrooms very well laid out and well stocked with towels and products. The views from our rooms were breathtaking. We ate in the 2 restaurants and in both we enjoyed superb food and service. But what impressed us most of all were the staff - all of those we met and spoke to were helpful, interested and obviously enjoyed and took pride in their hotel. Such a wonderful hotel - we aim to go back soon.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a view of the golf course and the sea.

Visited the old course hotel for 2 nights, this really is a fantastic hotel, everything about it was lovely, really nice rooms with the most comfortable bed, spotless modern bathroom with everything you could ask for. The gym and pool area are also fab, quality of food for breakfast good, nice bar area. The jigger inn which is on the course is really nice, very quaint, homely. Loved it, and can't wait to return one day, it truly is a quality hotel, 5 star service.

I feel I owe this splendid hotel a review, even if overdue. Our 3-generation family stayed here for 2 nights in July last year, and would want to go back for more. Seeing the 5-year old in our family paddle downstairs one cold morning a few days ago in her bathrobe and complimentary child-sized Old Course bedroom slippers and seeing her play with her again complimentary child golf set from the hotel told me it's about time I got round to adding to their tributes.

You would not think that a heritage hotel like this overlooking the Mecca for golfers would be as child-friendly as this, but indeed it is, in fact the most child-friendly that we've ever encountered. The welcome tea they served in our room also provided for the children, and when we told them that our one year old was lactose intolerant, they immediately provided her a dairy-free alternative. And you should have heard the oohs and aahs that came out from our mouths on entry into the impressive bedroom to see their complimentary St. Andrews toy bear, golf club set, and slippers for the children. We had booked a room with its truly magnificent view of the Old Course but asked to change it so we could have adjoining rooms instead. They kindly obliged us and got us 2 beautiful adjoining Eden rooms with still relatively good views.

Our stay was not long enough to truly savor the wonders of this hotel. in the short time that we had, we appreciated that there was a blocked off time in the pool with special toys for the children, the temperature in the water was perfect, and we thoroughly enjoyed tea of scones in the Conservatory (a must).

If you are there as a family and not for golf, do try to go over a weekend because you get to walk the Old Course on a Sunday. We were not aware of this when we booked, and were alarmed to see people strolling on the fairway, until we were told by the pro shop lady that St. Andrews the town still holds true to its Christian roots of sharing its assets with the community. It was a real bonus for us to be able to walk the grounds of this venerable and beautiful golf course.

We had one gripe, which was that the Sands Grill on our first night kept us waiting for our food, especially the kids', even though we were there early, but when a hotel is this good, you overlook certain shortcomings.

Room Tip: Pay a premium for the golf course facing rooms only if you expect to be in the room a fair bit. Oth...

I have to say that the service at this hotel has been the best my wife and I have received, and we have been to many a good hotel. Special thanks to three lovely guys.....David, Ralph and Thomas. They were so helpful and informative. It was just like being at home. If you upgrade to a golf course view, it will be worth every penny. Not only can you watch golfers in action, but the sea views are also fantastic. The only minor complaint, was the fact that we had a rather heavy-footed person above us, and they could be heard, so the sound-proofing isn't great. If you want a breakfast to keep you going all day, then this is the place to be. Wonderful, efficient staff, to boot. This hotel has everything you will need.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a golf course view. It's worth every penny.
