“HEAVENLY HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

Apologies this review is so late.
We stayed here in February 2012 for 2 nights. We are "regulars"!
Our allocated room for the first time ever was small and on requesting an alternative we were shown the most wonderful room in St Andrews - on the first floor overlooking the 18th fairway! My partner - a keen golfer- was in heaven. The bay window looked along the beach with 2 very comfortable easy chairs. We cannot recommend Simon the amazing Duty Manager and Kirsty the manager for offering us this upgrade!
Dinner in the restaurant in the basement was also highly commendable with good service and a very pleasant ambience.
Well done the staff of the Rusacks again. We will be back asap!
Frank Scott Freda Robertson

Room Tip: Front facing if you can afford it! Worth every penny!

Stayed here four days in June and had a decent stay. The best part is that you are on the 18th green of the old course and get to watch everyone tee off on the first hole. The breakfast that was included in the room rate was good.

Stayed in the Tom Morris Suite on the first floor. It was very spacious and clean. It did not have air conditioning or I could not find it. Luckily the weather was great and got down into the 50's at night.

The hotel was what I expected it to be. It is old, and could use a renovation but I enjoyed my time there. The staff were fine. Never really needed anything from them. Again, the best part is the location and views from your windows. I would stay here again for another golf trip. If it's just a group of guys it beats paying too much to stay at the Old Course Hotel.

I'd like to thank Kevin, Lia and all your staff for looking after us so well at the weekend. Our meal on the Friday night was most enjoyable (we were at a function on Saturday) and all the staff extremely efficient, helpful and friendly - even your night porter, who served up a glass of wine and snacks when we returned at 1 am from the wedding. The room was comfortable and well-appointed. We had a great few days and look forward to seeing you later in the year.

We stayed here on a Saturday night for my birthday. The staff were not particularly helpful or pleasant. No one helped with our heavy bags up the stairs and some direction to the lift would have been appreciated.

The bedroom itself was nice and clean, but scuff marks all over the walls and the bathroom definitely needed some tlc! Chipped paintwork everywhere, black marks in the bathroom.

We paid £280 for the night - thinking breakfast would be included, it wasn't! Breakfast would be another £17.50 for a full Scottish Breakie. The service was extremely poor - us having to seek out the waiter and asked to be seated. The waiter replying 'is it just you?!'. There was absolutely no atmosphere in the breakfast room and the obnoxious unaware staff added to the poor mood!

Would never pay that money again or stay in a Macdonald hotel again.

Poor doesn't cover it! Does not deserve 4*'s whatsoever!!

There is simply no better location in St Andrews at least for golfers. Even the parking lot has a view of the 18th hole of the Old Course. Before my arrival, Heidi Orr, the hotel's golf concierge, had very efficiently taken care of booking our tee times. We had booked two rooms and it looked as if they had not been updated since my last stay at the hotel 30 years ago. 220 was one of the smallest hotel rooms i have stayed in at any hotel worldwide. 320 was larger, but not much better. The hotel has retained all its history, but the Macdonald group, which now manages it, has instituted minimum service (other than above mentioned Heidi Orr) and appears to cater to groups of golfers. The locker room is a very nice touch to change before your first round or after your last one. We ordered drinks at the bar, only to be immediately kicked out because it was closing! Overall, I personally still prefer to stay at Rusacks than at the Old Course hotel because of the better location, but those who care about comfort should stay at the Old Course Hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms are very different in terms of size and view. Make sure that you know what you are booking.

My wife and I stayed at Rusacks for a Saturday night in early May. We had a room in the newer extension but with a view to the sea and over the 18th fairway of The Old Course. The room itself wasn't anything special and could have done with a freshen up of the paintwork and the screen in the shower was almost falling off. On the plus side the staff are brilliant here ie friendly and helpful and we had a great breakfast in the morning comprising fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals and delicious cooked breakfast with quality local ingredients (and not a hint of cooking oil!) in the dining room facing the golf course/sea. The weather was lovely both days which always helps! The hotel isn't cheap due to it's location and all year round demand from visitors so I feel the rooms should be smarter at these prices (we paid £160 BB for a double room)

Room Tip: Get a sea/golf course view if possible

Stayed over at the rusacks during a conference at the university and really enjoyed the experience. Staying in the Seve Ballesteros room, it has a view on the 17th and 18th hole of the mythic St-Andrews golf course as well as on the club house and the sea/beach. Room service and general cleanliness is without fault and bath facilities are spacious. The restaurants/bar within the hotel are also of very good standard and heavily frequented by students (especially the "one under") with breakfast being everything you would expect from a MacDonald hotel: comfort is definitely a way of life there...
