Had a great evening on Valentine's day in 2005 and decided to return on a Friday evening in June 2005 - Very disappointing.

Service was slow, staff were not polite, food did not live up to the previous experience.

Issues consisted of having to ask for menus and having to send 'cheese and biscuits' back when the dish consisted of a quarter of pound of mature cheddar and nothing else. Dish was returned consisting of the correct 'selection' but without an apology.

A disappointing return - improvements needed to restore confidence.

I booked the 'Inn' on the strength of the previous review and I was very disappointed. A room facing the internal courtyard might be different but the row of rooms facing the main road to Edinburgh actually sit 6 foot from the road - cars whizzed by all night! Location is very isolated and you would need a car to get there. Room was modern with a large bathroom but that was all it had going for it. We arrived around 5pm on a very cold day in May and the central heating was off. A freezing room didn't help but neither did the wooden floor and twin beds with brown vinyl-wrapped bases and a doona wrapped up in same vinyl sitting on the end of the bed. One bed was pushed against the wall to make room. Despite the good quality fittings, room was uninviting and cheerless and presented like a one star room. We also found the staff very cool.

The staff was not especially warm. We were expecting tons of charm, but room was shabby and charmless. Highly overrated. In their favor, tho, I left a jacket there, and without me even calling them, they mailed it all the way to the States.

Had 3 course Sunday lunch there recently. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and food tasted okay, but portions tiny! I usually can't manage 3 courses at lunchtime, but was glad I had the soup as well, otherwise I would have been starving with 2 courses! Come on , where were the veg? 2 sticks of asparagus and a few mangetout are ridiculous, and let's face it, veg are cheap! It's just not good enough, especially as we Scots are being encouraged to eat more fruit and veg! So less of the art please and let's have something a bit more substantial!
