We stayed two nights midweek and found ourselves in one of the upstairs rooms at the front of the hotel looking out onto the road. The room itself wasn't too bad in terms of decor and cleanliness, but the low, angled ceilings were unpleasant and I agree with some of the previous comments about the cheap furniture, although the sliding boards on the windows worked quite well as an alternative to curtains in my opinion and helped to keep out some of the road noise. The over-use of mirrors spoiled the entrance staircase to the room and gave a cheap and nasty effect. The entrance to the hotel itself is also very tatty, with weathered paintwork and temporary boarding on the door to the reception area. This area is also very cluttered and untidy and it must be said that the immaculate impression given by the website is certainly not achieved in reality.
The lack of attention to detail was also apparent in the shower, where the light above it was secured, Blue Peter style, by bits of sellotape. This is simply not good enough and the room should not have been used until this was properly repaired.
The restaurant was very quiet and this is hardly surprising considering the very expensive menu that is available. I asked for pasta, one of the only reasonably economical dishes on the menu and, strangely enough, there was no pasta available. The food we had was well presented, but certainly not worth the money, and the soup was very poor and lacking in flavour.

The restaurant area is not well decorated and the blinds, pictures and some of the furniture let it down. The chairs are so cheap that the back of one of them was flopping about. The tables are actually too high for the chairs, meaning that it is not very comfortable, particularly for smaller people. The tables are, however, a good size in terms of area, giving you plenty of room to spread out. Breakfast was good, although I am used to a lot more choice of cereals, jam and other items.
The staff in the hotel were excellent, extremely helpful and friendly.
There is the basis of a good hotel here, but far more attention to detail is required to ensure that all the rooms and facilities match the impression conveyed by the website.

“Great experience again”

Inn at Lathones

My husband decided to take me back to The Inn again as a surprise on Saturday April 19th 2008. We had the same room as last time in the new building. Some comments left have been very unkind. The decor is minimalistic not cheap and we had lovely curtains in our suite! The whirlpool bath is wonderful and the 4 poster bed divine! We had the best nights sleep since we were last there! The staff are genuinely nice and even though I slipped in the room and splashed red wine on the cream paintwork the staff weren't phased at all. I was in pieces hiding in the bathroom! My husband offered to paint the wall but the staff said it wasnt a problem! The breakfast was delicious too. We chose not to eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food.
Overall I wouldnt hesitate to recommend The Inn at Lathones and I cant wait till we go back again and again!!

“I just love the modern v the old”

Inn at Lathones

Apr 9, 2008

We came to the inn by chance having checked the web site for a short break. The welcome was friendly and relaxed and the wow happened when we were told we had been upgraded to one of their new rooms. Jacuzie bath special beds and so much space. We went into St Andrews and spent a lovely day looking all over and finding so much to do and came back ready for a good meal. We were supprised to be offered a cocktail menu that was really fun, saffron gin cocktails are just amazing! We chose dinner from the a la carte and had a delicious meal served with no rush and had a great bottle of Spanish wine Alistair explained was one of the oldest grapes in the world. We were too late for breakfast but still were looked after with freashly baked french paistries at 12.10pm! loveluy weekend, highly recomend it to all

“What a disappointment!”

Inn at Lathones

What a disappointment! We expected the inn to have cosy, comfortable accommodation, but the bedroom was cold and clinical. Whoever is resposible for the decor of the rooms needs a lesson in interior design. I would have thought it sensible to have the rooms decorated to match the character of a coaching inn and not some cheap motel. Be prepared also to have to walk out of the inn to get to your room in the courtyard if that is where they put you. We were unlucky enough to have to do that in the pouring rain. The walls of the rooms are paper thin, so be prepared for noise. We were asked by letter not to bring alcohol to the inn as they had a bar that was stocked with alcohol at reasonable prices. What a joke! If you are stupid enough to book this inn, take your own wine! Their prices are ludicrous. We consoled ourselves with the thought of the food after the shock of seeing the room- another major disappointment. We eat out a lot and appreciate good food. We also don't mind paying for quality. However the food was at best only passable and vastly overpriced. Our stay was an ordeal.

“Enjoyable weekend break”

Inn at Lathones

Jan 27, 2008

A weekend escape from the children proved to be a very pleasant and relaxing experience. The room was very fresh in appearance, spacious and with lovely open views across the fields. This was at the back of the hotel and other rooms into the courtyard or over the road could well prove a little noisy, particularly if there is a function on.

Spa bath with available toiletries created a very pleasant cappuccino froth in which to unwind and a separate walk in shower with spooky blue lighting added a contemporary twist.

On the basis of the breakfast, which was fairly standard fare, we chose not to eat at the restaurant because although the food was well reviewed it did not seem the quality of environment to justify the high price of meals. Other reviewers do seem quite satisfied though.

We would certainly consider a repeat visit though would want to ensure we wer able to choose our rooms to ensure country views away from the passing traffic.
