“Friendly and good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

Once a rather up-market establishment, the royal hotel is now rather shabby, but it was good value for money. the staff were friendly and it was located in the most interesting part of Kirkcaldy, in Dysart, with interesting attractions within walking distance including the old Tolhouse, the harbour and Ravenscraig Park and Castle.

If you are on a budget this hotel is ok only paid £40, booked late as I was in the area, only room available was a twin with no bathroom, needed new beds and alot of paint! the breakfast was all cooked in a microwave (I kept hearing it ping!) on the plus side the staff were friendly, would not recommend unless every where else was busy!

Room Tip: Ask for room with bathroom and toilet

we had occaision to dine in this hotel recently although the food wasnt too bad, the whole place smells with a horrable musty smell. While we were there the staff were all standind about discussing a previous employee and the conversation wasnt very savoury. The male owner of this hotel is the most arrogant obnoxious person i have every met, very unprofessional and a bit shy with the truth.Although i have not seen the rooms in this establishment(thankfully) the dining area was more than enough for us

My wife and I had lunch here today, and had an ok experience, which was tainted by an ineffective meet and greet. Our expectations were of typical pub food, at a cheap price.

First impressions.......outside of hotel, needing some TLC, and this is matched inside. A coat of paint would do wonders. You enter to the bar, and on the left is an old fashioned room which acts as the restaurant, the bar area to the right looked more modern, and welcoming. There were maybe 10 tables set out for lunch, and the restaurant was quite busy with the blue rinse brigade. The tables were set out ok but the condiments were sachets. Weirdly, some excellent rock ballads from the 80's were played, fine for us, but you would have thought some Neil Diamond or Johnny Mathis would have been more appropriate...

Meet and greet.....was not to the expected standard. Dont get me wrong, the waitress was friendly, if a little hyper. We were asked to sit in a lounge area until the waitress was ready to process us. She showed us to a table, and gave us our menus.......and that was it. Our drinks order wasnt taken, specials and soup were not explained. Bread rolls were given out, and eventually she returned to take our order. If she had taken the drinks order at the start, then there would have been every chance we would have ordered a second round of drinks.

Menu.....limited pub food, such as fish and chips, macaroni etc, no real surprises. Deals available included 2 courses for £7.95, or 3 for £8.95. We opted for lasagne, and a ploughmans lunch.

Service....apart from the meet and greet, was fine. The girl was friendly, and chatty to the old dearies. Food arrived in good time.

Food....my lasagne was fine, with plenty of cheddar cheese, and my wifes ploughman salad was good. Portion size was average, but smaller portions of selected dishes were available.

Value....was very good, with 2 courses and 2 drinks for £21.

Overall....unfortunately we agreed that we would not return and couldn't recommend to anyone younger than 65.
