“Surly staff and an unloved air”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2006

We recently stayed at the Strathearn for a short break and were disappointed with what we found. The hotel lacks character; the rooms are failry spartan and a the whole place could do with a thorough spring clean and a lick of paint to boot. Although one of the rooms we stayed in was dubbed a "family room" it lacked a bath; the other single that we used had little more space than that occupied by the bed. It was, however, "blessed" with a view of the kitchen extractor fan and the room opposite....

The hotel staff are generally young, inexperienced and surly and did little to add to the manager's less-than-warm welcome. It is all too apparent that the hotel's core business is in weddings and overnight guests are something of an inconvenience. The whole place has an unloved air about it, and if staying in Kirkcaldy again, we shall seek an alternative hotel.

I have stayed at this hotel on three occasions and have always found the people to be very helpful, and the rooms most adequate. For those interested in visiting the East Neuk of Fife, as well as the links at St. Andrews, the hotel is superbly situated. Located in a residential area across the road from some parkland, one can stroll through the park alongside the Firth of Forth and view Edinburgh in the distance. The food at the Strathearn is good and reasonable in cost, and a full Scottish breakfast is included in the room rates.

We have just returned from a long weekend at the Strathearn Hotel in Kirkcaldy. Frances and the staff at the Strathearn are very friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. As you walk into the reception there is a huge roaring fire in the hearth. We stayed in Room 7 which is above the kitchen. It is a family room with a double bed, 2 singles, a sofa bed, tv, tea and coffee making facilities and a bathroom with separate shower cubicle. Frances was worried that we would be disturbed by the fans from the kitchen but we were not disturbed by any noise during our stay. Frances cooks breakfast in the morning and didn't put the fans on too early and the chefs finish cooking at 9pm anyway. For breakfast there is fruit juice and cereal and you can also have a full Scottish breakfast with a choice of fried or scrambled eggs and toast and marmalade/jam. The hotel also serves lunches, high tea, dinner and bar meals. There is a varied menu, the food is good and it is reasonably priced. Try the chefs home made shortbread too! Ravenscraig Park is opposite the hotel and overlooks the Firth of Forth. The town is 10 minutes in a taxi and is approximately £5.75 each way. We had an enjoyable stay and will be going back for another long weekend as soon as possible.
