“Good hotel - but not on a friday night!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2009

Hotel itself was nice & good value for money, the room was nicely decorated & clean. Thursday night all was quiet...Friday we went to a wedding, when we got back at 11ish the music from the pub below (live band) was so loud the floor was vibrating & we couldn't even hear our own tv. Thankfully this ended at 12ish...but then the disco started, just as loud! This went on til 1pm. Have stayed in many hotels but this was the worst for noise - would never go back on a friday/saturday!

Stayed in the Laurel Bank Hotel for one night in July as we were at a wedding in the nearby Balbirnie House. The room was nicely refurbished and was more than adequate for a one night stay.

Staff were very helpful and organised a taxi for us to take us to the hotel and back again, so all fine there. Came back to the bar for a wee drink after the wedding and met some of the locals! Okay, we're both Scottish and we couldn't understand what was being said to us! All very funny as a hen night were in - okay not everyone's idea of fun, but all harmless and very welcoming.

Breakfast the next day was a hearty fry to soak up the excesses of the night before. All in all, a very good hotel if in the Markinch area, with plenty of parking.

I suspect this hotel makes its money on a weekend taking overflow wedding guests from the Balbirnie Hotel round the corner. During the week it really lacks atmosphere. Maybe we hit a quiet week.

The bar area is clean and the staff, although there didn't seem to be many, were very pleasant. The Deucars IPA is probably the worst pint of beer I have ever had - and I love Deucars.

The bedrooms were clean - I asked for a sink plug - the following day, when I came back there was no water - hot or cold. There's logic, I didn't need the plug anymore. It was sorted after a couple of hours.

Just one guy doing breakfast, taking orders, apparently doing the cooking, cooked breakfasts very nice. Otherwise just a couple of cereals and cheap orange juice.

Just seemed to be ticking over with a tight reign on costs. But I paid £50 for the night so no rip off there.

It has to be said that Markinch is quiet, if you're looking for food follow the locals to the Town House Hotel and restaurant by the railway station, it's excellent.

Maybe they have a sink plug there.
