The Keavil House Hotel is quite a way out of Dunfermline, and well on the way to Rosyth so there isn't really much to speak of around the hotel and it's a fair way across the Forth to Edinburgh. I wouldn't stay there if I was visiting Edinburgh as it's too difficult to get there. The drive from Edinburgh airport should take about 25 mins, but it took over 2.5 hours on the way as the Forth road bridge was closed due to high winds.
The staff were generally ok, checkout seemed a bit laborious and I couldn't help thinking they could do with a bigger reception desk.
We ate at the restaurant and had to wait half an hour for a table even though we had booked and there were only 3 other tables in use. The food was a bit mediocre for the price and was quite astonishingly pretentious. It was something like £23 for 2 courses and £27 for 3. Everything had a slightly bizarre sauce (eg fois gras vinaigrette with the beef and chorizo mouse with the scallops) which all seemed a bit unnecessary and like they were trying way too hard.
I had a ground floor room with twin beds. The room was fairly large and was clean although the decor was a bit dated, chintzy and slightly tired. The bed was hideously soft, although I did have a good nights sleep.
The gym and swimming pool in the attached health club were pretty nice, and I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the pool.
The breakfast was OK, there didn't seem to be very many people in the hotel but was still a decent enough range and the scrambled egg was superior.
