“Lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

A lovely place, beautiful food, great service. Especially the dessert, a blue-cheese cake with trimmings, was really good.

I was in a group of 19 people, and I'm afraid the noise level was high (just 20+ people talking a bit loudly to make themselves understood, no shouting, singing or brawling...). Several of us felt bad for other diners who maybe had hoped for a romantic tête-à-tête or at least a quiet conversation. Not sure if it's the acoustics of the place or members of my party, or whether this has been an issue with other groups than us.

“Excellent food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013 via mobile

We live in Yorkshire and this was our second visit to Edinburgh and the restaurant. We booked well in advance, however our table was still being used despite their web page saying that they do not turn tables. We were directed to the pub across the road for a drink and had to wait for a phone call. This took 20 mins. Having said this the food was out of this world and well worth the wait. Although we should have not had to wait! We would definitely recommend the food.

“Lovely surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Even though it's located in a fairly touristy area this small restaurant is a gem. We had a wonderful lunch that exceeded expectations, and to top it all off the best sticky toffee dessert. Attentive, friendly and efficient staff, tasteful decor, interesting wine list. Absolutely want to go back.

“Inventive, extremely well executed food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

Shared a meal here with friends prior to attending the Tattoo. Thus slight time constraint, which was a pity as I would love to linger over food like this. The excellent serving staff were very attentive to the timing though, and it was not a problem and yet didn't feel rushed. It is wonderful to see a menu full of dishes that are different to the norm. It makes you wonder "will that really work?". Let me assure that in this restaurant, it will. For instance, I had a leek and cheese bread and butter pudding to start that combined flavours, colours and textures wonderfully. My main of steak was more conventional, but I only try that in good restaurants in Britain (where compared to Australia it is expensive to get really good fillet, and only the best have the suppliers to do so). This was a superb, tender and sweet piece of meat, delivered 'blue' as ordered. The dessert, pear tatin, sounds conventional again, but in fact is deconstructed, the pear element mostly being a mousse. Delicious again. All to the accompaniment of quite reasonably priced Rioja.
