“£40 For a Building Site”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

While the location is central and very convenient for the Edinbught Festival, this summer only hostel has a bit of a nerve to charge £40 a night for being surrounded by a 'work in progress' - this is a very active building site. Dust and noise abound. Kitchen was not as well equipped as one would have hoped. Check-in staff very friendly and helpful however.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else if you can get in.

This is a great place to stay if you are in Edinburgh for the festivals and are on a budget. You can walk from here to most of the venues, and coffee can be had at Caffe Nero at Blackwell's Bookshop which is less than 5 minutes walk up the cobbled hill. Of course you can make your own breakfast in the kitchen. Each flat has its own kitchen, because you are staying in a university residence which becomes a temporary hostel. Now the downside. The shared bathroom can be a a let down as another reviewer has mentioned. Wonky shower, hairs in the basin etc. This year, 2013, they are building something in the courtyard and I thought the hostel was closed there was so much builders's kit in front of the entrance. This said, I will keep going back because even at around £40.00 for a single room, it is still good value, especially during the Edinburgh festivals

I stayed 4 nights at the Metro Hostel in July 2013. With accommodation being rather expensive in Edinburgh, this was a great deal. You get a single room to yourself for just £23 per night, this is unlike most hostels that have huge dormitories. So it's great for privacy. Kitchen use is also limited to 6 people and you only share the bathroom with same people. So it's much better than normal hostels.
Tesco supermarket, pubs, restaurants, and tons of souvenir shops are just around the corner. Royal Mile is just a couple of minutes away.

Receptionists are friendly and helpful. You can leave luggage before check in and after check out.

Only downside is the noise, you're in the heart of Edinburgh so no surprise that you hear noise from the street but it may bother light sleepers.

The location is very good, nearby to the main streets and shops, access into the hostel is secure and the room itself was to a good standard. The staff were friendly and the communal kitchen/lounge were good- but this depends on your room mates as they are the ones who mess it up.
Unfortunately the shower was not working, bath was grubby and the bath taps had no water water, so it made it difficult to wash.

Would I stay here again, yes but not for more than few days, a couple of days would be fine.

There is plenty of choice in Edinburgh so keep searching

Room Tip: Choose to be away from the bar to avoid loud music

This is ideally placed in terms of easy walking access into the main parts of the city, but this is probably all it has going for it. I obvioulsy don't expect a 5* experience in a hostel, but paying £65 per room was a bit much for somethign so very basic. If I'd paid £40 I'd have overlooked the light not coming on for ages in the bathroom, the washers on the taps needing replacing, the dubious stains on the matresses and carpet, and the waft of cigeratte smoke through the open window. And the noise from the bar below. Maybe. But I wouldn't stay here again, and wouldn't recommend it unless you are going to be in the bar downstairs till 2am and then probably the noise won't bother you.

That said, the staff were poilte and helpful, and can't be faulted.

Pros. Awesome location, walk to station, shops, Royal Mile, castle and so much more. Price is great for solo travellers who dont want to share a room. Kitchen and bathroom were clean.
Cons. If you value sleep and are anything but a heavy sleeper, dont stay here. My bed squeaked loudly every time I moved so I ended up putting my mattress on the floor. All doors are heavy fire doors, and the girls in my apartment did not see the need to close doors, just let them bang. Which shakes the walls. Construction work currently going on around the perimeter of the building, 7 days. I ended up getting ear plugs and napping a lot. Oh, and in a 10 night stay, we ran out of toilet paper at least 5 times, despite housekeeping attending daily.

This university accomodation turns to be hostel only in summer.
It's in good location, a couple mins walk to the Royal Mile (High Street), 5 mins walk to Waverley Station. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room is clean and spacy with a wardrobe, desk, side table and book shelf. I was in block 7 flat 6 room 4. It was in 3rd floor. The free wifi is available, but in my room the strength was not good: connect and disconnect many times. There are a bathroom with a toilet, and another room is only toilet which all are not en-suite. There's a switch outside the bathroom for heat up the water, and a pull own string inside bathroom (just behind the door) for activate shower. Don't forget to pull it. The kitchen facilities are great and clean.

Room Tip: Ask staff which side of each block is not noisy because there's a bar near this hostel.
