Description: Minimalists and speed-eaters, avert your eyes. Rhubarb has arrived in all its opulent, theatrical, lingering glory. Set in twenty acres of gorgeous parkland yet a short drive from the Royal Mile, Rhubarb and its hotel home, Prestonfield, are the creation of James Thomson, who bought you the Witchery and Tower restaurants. A black-kilted porter escorts you to Rhubarb's two oval Regency dining rooms decorated in mad baroque splendour, with giant chandeliers, silk wall coverings, and ancestral portraits. The menu, created by chef John McMahon, uses classic techniques and modern inspiration to transform ingredients sourced from small artisan suppliers into sublime grub. Try starter of Gewurztraminer poached foie gras au tronchon with pickled cherries, main course of breast of Loue chicken on tarragon risotto, and top it with the signature assiette of rhubarb desserts. There are more than five hundred wines to choose from, and more than one hundred malts. Linger after your meal in the Leather or Tapestry room and let your senses swoon.

“Very good but not as good as it thinks ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

I have eaten in Rhubarb a few times and also booked a private dining room for an event. The food is always very, very good and the service is what you would expect from a five star restaurant. The rooms can get (and feel) a little stuffy but the decor is lush and traditional; especially enjoyable is waiting for a table in the whisky room, with a whisky, of course. One of the best wine tips I have ever had came from the sommelier here - Rustenberg wines from Stellenbosch, a complete bargain - but, when all is said and done, Rhubarb is not quite as good as the main competition in Edinburgh, and the money you'll spend here could be better spent elsewhere. £150-£300 for a decent meal for two, all in. That being said, if you are looking for a luxury break in Edinburgh, or for a fancy wedding venue, then Prestonfield is about as good as it gets - and having both the Rhubarb restaurant and the Prestonfield golf Course on your doorstep would be a special bonus.

“Simply excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014 via mobile

We were lucky not to get a table at the Witchery! Otherwise we'd never have discovered this absolute gem - Rhubarb.
From the moment we set foot in the lovely Manor building dating from 1640 we felt 'at home'. The welcome was genuinely warm, an apperitif taken in front of a log fire set the scene. The table d'hote dinner (£33) was delicious and by far the best value for money experience had for a long time. The service was attentive and discrete, efficient and friendly. The surroundings comfortable and tastful. Lighting by candles just right. We finished the evening with digestives in the Whisky room (seating made from real antlers!). All in all an exceptional experience which can be recommended without hesitation.

“Fine dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Friendly, attentive service - just posh enough. Excellent food with a good range of choices - a shame I only had space for one of the great sounding desserts. All housed in a beautiful old country house in the city.

“If you've not been, go!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

Went with just for January vouchers, my second visit and the food was much better, a very good standard, every one in my party enjoyed it. One year old baby girl made very welcome, one or two service issues, had to ask for butter and had to ask 3 times (3 different people) for our coffee but it's such a fabulous place this shouldn't put you off. All the staff were very friendly and polite. It's very atmospheric to go on a dark winters eve with all the candles etc.

“Sunday Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

We have been many times but keep coming back as we love the ambiance and service. The set lunch is a good value deal. We always order the tart tartan which is shared between two. It is the best desert we have tasted anywhere. Can't wait for our next special occasion so we can go back.
