I've lived in Edinburgh for a long time and have very fond memories of Bar Napoli, especially the lively atmosphere generated by the Italian waiters. So it seemed like a good idea to take my 15 year old daughter there for a treat on Friday evening. I'm not really sure if my standards have gone up or if this place really does need a bit of a re-vamp. We were seated in the quiet side area of the restaurant which is rather dull. We ordered garlic bread for a starter and that was a real surprise - made from a standard sliced white loaf and burnt around the crust. Even my daughter thought this isn't really what you expect to get at an authentic Italian resaurant. Our main courses were OK but not as tasty as they should have been. On the way to & from ladies toilets I couldn't help noticing various neglected maintenance jobs like cracked floor tiles, and the desert menus were old and torn. The jolly Italian waiters I remember have been replaced by a mixed bunch, some more helpful than others. Overall I think they do well due to their location, prices and opening hours, but after all this time perhaps they need to invest to ensure they keep their good name.
