I booked this place for a surprise for my girlfriend and I the weekend just before Christmas. The setting was perfect as we rolled into Edinburgh Waverley station on an absolutely freezing cold day having passed the last four hours from London in thick frost. A short walk from the Station across Princes Street up onto George Street made for a pleasant brief stroll before arriving at a cobbled street tucked away behind the boutique stores of Edinburgh's most fashionable drag.
We arrived at Four Hill Street which from the outside has the appearance of a private members club. We knocked on the door and were greeted promptly by Stuart & Charlotte, two of the most delightful people you could imagine, who welcomed us into their home as if we were family. That said, their professionalism throughout the stay was evident. Stuart quickly carried our cases up to our room where we shortly arrived close behind Charlotte. We booked the room "Bruce" which is a stunning showpiece of both antiques and sympathetic renovation. The deep purple bed spread atop the kind size four-poster beckoned as we slipped of our shoes and satisfyingly slumped into the mattress. Charlotte brought us tea not five minutes after, served in wonderful antique china.
The room was very sizable with a non-working fireplace, two sash windows with views over the cobbled street and shutters to keep out the light for the morning. Their was also a medium size LCD television with digital TV that was subtly tucked away in the corner next to a tray of complimentary tea and shortbread. The bathroom was rather small but was appointed with stylish and brand new fittings that did not disappoint. Also provided, was a black folder with all of the pamphlets for Edinburghs top attractions which is very handy when trying to choose between all the wonderful ideas one may have read about on the internet before arriving. One magazine contained every restaurant in Edinburgh and maps and directions to all which was also very helpful.
We were dutifully handed our keys for our room and the front door before wondering out into the town in search of food. After a walk around the market and a visit to the 'Mark King's Close' we returned to our room. We were out and about that evening to the Edinburgh Festival Theater and then Rhubarb at Prestonfield for dinner which was about to prove difficult with taxis due to the time of the year. However, Charlotte rang through to our room and said she had managed to secure a taxi for us. Another example of how the intimacy of their B&B was matched with the service and professionalism of a much higher staffed establishment.
Both the theater and dinner were excellent and we slept very well that night in probably the world most comfortable bed thought I am sure that each room bares this advantage also. The morning came, and a brief stroll down to the first floor unveiled the wonderful lounge and breakfast room which rather felt like stepping onto the set of Sense and Sensibility. It is a communal affair with eight chairs positioned around an antique dining table. This however did not put us off as the atmosphere of the room only encouraged those around us to open up and chat freely about their travels and experiences of Edinburgh so far. Matched also by a mutual appreciation of a well sourced (Crombies if Edinburgh) Scottish breakfast, we felt that the concept of eating in someones living room/dining room was an excellent one.
We were soon alone at the table having taken out time over breakfast and started chatting to Charlotte, bending her ear and making the most of her excellent knowledge of Edinburgh. For what must be a standard level of service in this institution, one gets the feeling that they are made to feel very special by the couple running this boutique B&B and even like one of the family.
I had trawled through the few reviews available online before booking this place and have to say that not one has been remotely negative. This place is very special and I rather feel will earn the love of all of its customers. I went out on a whim with this booking having always believed that B&B's couldn't provide the level of service one might expect from their higher staffed rivals. However, I am happy to admit that this place was perfect in every way and I cannot wait to return again to witness the beautiful furniture and antiques, wonderfully festive Christmas decorations, excellent rapport with Charlotte and the professionalism of service demonstrated by Stuart (and of course, the breakfast).
Thankyou both for providing a truly memorable experience for my girlfriend and I. Your effort and attention to detail across all of your business is excellent. And the biggest bonus of all is that for the class of the establishment, its an absolute steal. If Four Hill Street sets the standard for 'boutique B&B's', then I will probably never get a room there again!
