This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel with my parents in Leith as we like to meet up and visit Edinburgh. the first occasion was in July and although the rooms were basic they were clean and the breakfast was good, seeing as we only stayed for one night it was adequate.
On this occasion we decided to book again and stay two nights. We arrived and were escorted to our rooms which were located down a side street to the hotel at the rear in an annex complex seperate to the hotel in a rundown courtyard with what looked like social security housing in the car park, litter, damage and junk everywhere. We entered our rooms and discovered vermin control poison traps lying around on the floor, the heating not working and the smell of damp. We asked the manager Gabriella to sort the heating out whilst we went back into town and expressed how unhappy we were with the location of the rooms (the last visit we stayed in the house itself). Upon our return we were informed that the heating had been broken for sometime and despite her trying to get the owners to repair this it was not being carried out. After much discussion we agreed to accpet a family room (we had booked two doubles as my husband was supposed to be joining me but could not make it) so myself and my parents spent the weekend sharing a family room, you can imagine how uncomfortable that is at 31 years old!!
In the morning we went down for breakfast. The heating was not working still and the dining room was freezing. The breakfast arrived swimming in grease and freezing cold and despite our attempts we could not eat much and left hungry and slightly qeasy a feeling which stuck with all three of us for the remainder of the day.
The family room was clean but on the second night after trying to locate a plug socket we found yet more vermin traps in the room, the main light did not work, this room had a bath and no shower, the bath did not keep the water in as the plug did not fit so it was a quick wash before you were sat in the buff with no water!! We skipped breakfast the next morning and checked out upon which I was advised that I was fortunate to have insisted on changing rooms as that night they had booked guests in who had opened the wardrobe to put their clothes and discovered a large mouse running around, suffice to say they did not stay.
The worst weekend ever. It spoilt our entire trip and despite booking this room 2 months previously and being organised with our arrangements so we could fully appreciate the little time we had together (family meets only happen twice a year becuase of the distance we live apart) we wasted time trying to sort out another room, ringing round desperately trying to get another room at such short notice and within budget, not sleeping well as the only other people who took the room next to us were a bunch of blokes on the razz for the weekend and going hungry and paying for breakfast becuase we did not want to feel ill all day.
Terrible customer service the owners could not care less and left poor Gabriella with only two weeks experience on the spot, with them taking bookings but clearly not sorting the long term NO HEATING situation out, in fact they were still taking books whilst we were there....the poor girl was exasperated by it all but could do nothing to help.
I am attempting to get some form of refund but wont hold my breath judging by the lack of proffessionalism of the owners. A terrible hotel please take note and avoid unless you have a fetish for mice and the cold!!!!!!!
