When we arrived we were asked if we had no problems with another room as booked (twin ensuite instead of double ensuite). When we saw the large room with 1 twin and 1 single bed and also a huge couch we did not bother at all! Is was in fact one of the largest rooms we had seen since a long time, especially when you always stay in ordinary hotels/motels. It was very luxurious with a lot of cushions and decorations and also the bathroom was very well equipped. Also Mrs. Todd did her utmost to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Other positive details: good breakfast (and served on time if you told the evening before how late and if you want continental or Scottish), enough parking space and a busstop within 100 metres (day & night bus!).
We also slept in the four poster bedroom, which was even more luxurious than the other rooms. It lies, however, on the street side, so if you sleep very light and hear every noise, you cannot leave your window open because of the street traffic early in the morning.
We made a reservation at 'A room in Leith' in Leith situated at Dock Place. Excellent food, very friendly and a beautiful terrace!

  • Liked — Hospitality, luxury
  • Disliked — Electronic showers: did not work properly in the four poster room

It's a great place to stay - the facilities are as good you would get in a hotel but with the friendly atmosphere of a home.

The rooms are large and beautifully decorated with great care. The breakfast - lots of choice and served on time.

It is well situated - there is bus stop at the front door that takes you straight into the centre. It's close to Portobello beach and also the now trendy Leith. It's easy to find, just of the A1 as you come into Edinburgh from the south.

We started going to Edinburgh for the festival several years ago and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else now. Theressa and Des make a special effort for all their guests and very friendly and approachable.

Just returned from a new year break at the aaron lodge and was pleasantly surprised my partner and myself were booked into room 4 which we believe is the most elegant room with a four poster bed and as the comment before suggests lots of cushions. Breakfast is an excellent start to the day and the bus is easy to get into the city centre. parking is not bad in the city centre if you are traveling in on a bank holiday! Excellent and very friendly with lots of parking would certainly recommend, Only disappointment was that hogmany celebrations were canceled but the warmth and shelter of the hotel provided much needed comfort from 70mph winds!! :o)

Stayed for 3 nights with some South African friends. It is classified as a private hotel, but only does B&B. Owned and run by same Scottish family for over 18 years and they have just completely refurbished it with many luxury touches.
The location is Milton Road East, in the SE part of the Edinburgh suburbs, just off the A1 road into the city. Very convenient for no. 44 bus into city centre (don't try to drive/park in the city centre!) The location is quiet; there is a Best Western hotel nearby for the nearest restaurant and it is easy to drive to the harbourside at Leith for a selection of bistros, pubs etc.
Breakfast at the Aaran is the usual large Scottish affair, but tell them the night before whether you prefer Scottish or continental.
They were very welcoming and helpful; the rooms are well equipped if over- furnished with cushions and bedding, such is the enthusiasm for the refurbishment programme!
The dining room is large, bright and light, overlooking a courtyard garden.
Plenty of parking space. Illustrations on their website and in the Scottish Tourist Board brochre.
