One Royal Crescent is hard to categorise. To call it a bed and breakfast doesn't do it justice. On the other hand it is not a hotel. So what is it? It's like staying home from home (or rather home to very upmarket home) in a gorgeous Playfair mansion in the heart of Edinburgh's historic New Town.
I have stayed all over the world in a range of accommodation but I have never arrived to my destination to find a post it note addressed to me stuck above the doorbell! The management had a problem as One Royal Circus had been overbooked due maybe to the fact that as well as being personally managed by the owners Susan and Mike, it now features in the Mr & Mrs Smith guide and can be booked via that website. We had booked for three nights a downstairs room but it was not available for the entire period, despite us having booked 6 months in advance. Were we happy to move rooms for a night? No we were not. However, within an hour the problem was sorted and the room was ours, plus a bottle of champagne on ice for our inconvenience! This is personal service at the best. I can only liken the experience to staying in a Riad in Morocco where again one receives exemplary personal service, which makes one's stay that bit special.
The room was beautifully fitted out (with no view as we knew it was to be at basement level) with a lovely tiled bathroom complete with high quality scottish toileteries. My only complaint was that the bathroom was rather dark, but this is something that the owners are aware of and changes to the lighting will be made. There was no bath but a fantastic walk in wet-room style power shower. Superb.
As we were visiting Edinburgh for the Festival we did not spend a lot of time in the 'hotel', but had we done so you are given 'run of the house' which includes a large billiards room, a salon complete with grand piano (and reams of sheet music... ah if only I could play) and a well stocked bar from which you can help yourself at no extra cost (except for spirits and champagne). Time for late night chatter too with the other guests...
Breakfast was cooked either by Susan (the owner) or her wonderful helper Cassandra, and consisted of fresh juice, fresh fruit salad, eggs etc to order, yoghurts, toast, jams etc. It was pretty good, sitting at separate tables in the large farmhouse style kitchen. You can go and help yourself there too, to juices, tea coffee, biscuits etc.
All in all a special experience.
