We booked Ten Hill Place for a couple of nights as we were attending a friends party nearby. Whilest there we decided to stay an extra night and take in Edinburgh. Ten Hill Place is well located to enjoy Edinburgh. We were within walking distance of the major attractions such as the Grassmarket and the Castle and museums etc.
On arrival the check-in process was poor. The receptionist was on his own and was stretched at the time. We were invited to check-in at the desk, then left standing while he had to dissapear to get someones luggage from storage. Half way through our check-in a group of guests thrust a mobile at him demanding that he tells the taxi driver directions to the property, leaving us waiting again whilest other guests were attended to.
The room was as expected, mostly clean and a good first impression, however you can tell that fixtures and fittings are cheap. There is very little "quality" about the property. The room was large, but this was obviously to make up for the view. We looked over an alley with an overflowing skip. There was a taller building opposite so we saw only concrete through the window. I have attached pictures. Perhaps the strangest part of the room was the bathroom door. This was a frosted glass door (like a shower door really) with clear glass lines through it, therefore you can be watched "on the throne". I imagine that this was an effort to be modern, but does not work for me.
Breakfast is terrible. I would not go back purely for that reason. The whole service is badly thought out. Tea and coffee is not left on your table in pots/jugs, it has to be poured for you. I personally would rather I got a pot/cafetiere of coffee on the table and then the service staff do not have to worry about it. The hot buffet can only get one person at the food at any one time, which makes getting a plate of food very slow. The food was either over cooked, under cooked or they had run out. The hot buffet was never topped up before items ran out, therefore increasing the queing and waiting. There is a toaster for you to toast your own bread, but it is too small/slow for a busy Sunday morning. Would be better off toasting in the kitchen and bringing to the table to speed up service. The fruit bowl, which looked like an attempt at a display was rotten. The pineapple had seen better days, the apples had holes in them and the bannanas looked like they were going to walk themselves out. Worst of all, the restaurant area is just not big enough for the number of bedrooms and this is not helped by the slow service bought on by the challenges outlined above.
Check-out was fine. There were no issues on the bill that needed disputing and it was quick and efficient.
£115 per night B&B for this hotel is over priced. The bedrooms are slightly better than the Premier Inn brand, but nearly twice the price. The service is not as good. The hotel is good for business if you dont mind paying the price. I would not recommend it for leisure breaks.
