As always when I have an overall negative impression, I'll just state the good and the bad so people can make up their own minds what they are looking for.
Good:
* breakfasts (included for all residents) are excellent
* staff are all friendly and helpful, but overall very inexperienced. You would expect this as I think the average age would be 19 - great when you want a drink or breakfast, not great when you want efficient checkin or any problems addressed
* maintenance is swift (which I would think is necessary). In just a two day stay we encountered the following problems: towel rack falling off the wall 3 times, lights in the bathroom wouldn't stop flicking even when switched off, lift broke down, plug in the sink would not work
* funky decor, just don't look too closely - it is a bit tired, eg the fluffy bedside rugs had cigarette burns, the grouting around the bathroom was cracked, there was a definite water damage mark above the shower where there was clearly a bad leak from upstairs, our shower cubicle leaked all over the floor of the bathroom each time we showered, the push down plug in the sink would not work
* sheets on the bed were lovely
* housekeeping was efficient
Bad:
* only having a shower when there is easily room for a bath just seems cheap
* if you are in one of the rooms at the back of the hotel, they overlook the back street where every day of our stay a truck pulled up at about 8am and started throwing glass bottles into a recycling bin for at leats 30 minutes. This was on a Friday morning and Saturday morning. There is no possibility for a lie in. When we mentioned this, it was greeted with a shrug of the shoulders. This alone would mean I would not stay again - I do note though that there was never any audible noise from the bar
* whilst the ambience when you walked in was always young and funky, which we liked, there was really no possibility of a comfortable time in the bar - which sometimes at a hotel you like to have a relaxing drink before heading out
* checkin was awful - we arrived about 10pm after our flight was delayed, and could not hear the "receptionist" (once we found him) over the sound of the bar - it really is equivalent to trying to check in with a barman. Equally checkout was dire - everyone descends at 11am, and there is only room for 2 people and bags at the desk, so as the lift continues to bring more people down, there is almost carnage as everyone falls all over each other. Quite amusing really
I had read all the reviews so knew what to expect, and did not think it would bother me to be in a funky place, but really it is quite inconvenient, and there are a number of other options in Edinburgh to stay where you can sleep in, and not continually have the "funky" decor collapsing around you. Avoid room 9!

  • Liked — location and breakfast
  • Disliked — noise every morning so no possibility of sleep in, inefficient (tho friendly) staff

We have just returned from a night at the Tigerlily. Great hotel, very funky, immaculate, clean. We had booked a double room, but when we saw it, we realised it had no bath - only a "wet room" - I really think the hotel needs to make this clear on it's website and promotional literature - that there are only 2 rooms with baths! However, when we told the hotel we were not happy with the room as it didn't have a bath, they immediately upgraded us to a mini suite (with bath) at no extra charge. The customer service is second to none, and all the staff are very polite and bend over backwards to help.

All room have an ipod and speakers loaded with the latest tunes, a plasma screen and dvd, fluffy robes and slippers and White Company products. Great touches. Housekeeping was the best I've ever encountered.

When we were upgraded to the mini suite - this has a roaring fire in front of the bed- verrrry nice :)!!

We couldn't get in for dinner at Tiger Lily, but we did have breakfast which was excellent.

We would definitely return.

  • Liked — Great touches in the rooms, very comfortable beds,
  • Disliked — Front desk - very small and crowded and inexperienced check in staff.

Trot up to Tigerlily on the grand George Street - about 10 mins walk from the station , home of designer clothes, cafes and cars the first thing you notice is the pink neon lighting outlining all the windows of the facade, and the shiny white lights of the front of the bar. It looks tempting and is a good barometer of what lies inside.

We spurged out on a celebratory weekend at Tigerlily and it was fabulous from start to finish. When we arrived at 12 we left our bags with the porter unable to check in til 2 - when we came back our room wasn't ready so we were graciously offered cocktails in the bar and a room upgrade - no grumbles - just very swift and discreet service.

The staff are excellent without being in your face, and friendly not at all snooty. The hotel and bar is a glorious mixture of designs, with pink accents all over the place, it looks and feels glamorous. The rooms from what I saw of others on our way down the corridors are all well appointed - the mini suite we had (29) was huge - decadent and luxurious - a large walk in shower and all mod cons.

My only quibble and it is minute compared to all the plus' is the air con. I hate them, as they drone all night and this was no exception - and as the windows didn't open we were trapped!

All in all a very sexy and romantic place to spend a couple of nights - the cocktails in the bar are sublime too.

  • Liked — great staff and design deluxe
  • Disliked — air conditioning

Just back from a long weekend in Edinburgh for our 3rd anniversary. We bkd Tigerlily after reading reviews and we weren't disappointed. Hotel is very stylish, staff are young, trendy and professional. Our room (19) was amazing, very large with good quality/chic furniture with all the latest technology thrown in. Particularly loved the red lights in the window. The bar is always busy (we didn't hear a thing though in our room) and yes it is difficult to get a seat. People watching is a must and we had a great couple of evenings watching the "beautiful people" do their thing!! Drinks are a little expensive but you don't stay at somewhere like Tigerlily to watch the pennies. Only ate at the hotel once (room service after over indulging on the champagne cocktails) and the quality was excellent. Yes, you are asked "Are you here for drinks" everytime you walk in but it wasn't a problem and it's actually quite nice to walk into a place and not be ignored. Hotel is situated on the best street in Edinburgh for shopping, restaurants and bars. I'd recommend Tigerlily to anyone wanting to stay right in the heart of Edinburgh's trendy area and not have to walk too far to enjoy all the city has to offer.

  • Liked — Stylish, large room with all the mod cons & nice touches i.e. milk in fridge for coffee
  • Disliked — Not being able to arrange a later check out time and not enough comfy seats in bar area
