Dovecot is a large house situated in a quiet residential area of Corstorphine with free off street parking and within easy walking distance of a frequent bus service to Edinburgh with an all day ticket giving good value for money. (Warning, Edinburgh bus drivers do not give change).
Pro’s
We had booked room 2 which is the double en suite upstairs room. This was spacious well furnished and clean. It was also equipped with two comfortable longer chairs, something not often found in four star hotels. Maggie will go out of her way to be helpful and has a good knowledge of where to go and how to get around. She was also extremely flexible at the time of booking as we were visiting the Tattoo and at the time did not know whether we would be allocated tickets. The night of the Tattoo was very cold and windy and on our return at 2330 we found that Maggie had been in the room and closed the curtains and put on the heating. A very thoughtful touch.
Con’s
The only downside to the stay for me is that breakfast has to be ordered the night before although this seems to be the “norm” in Scotland but myself I prefer to make a choice on the morning depending on how I feel, even if this means waiting for the meal although It was a fixed menu with the main course being the Full Scottish with no alternative such as poached or scrambled egg (vegetarian was available). It was also served at a fixed time of 0830 rather than a flexible half hour time slot.
General
Breakfast is also served at a communal table, this was fine for us as it helped interact with the other guests but be aware of this if you are not a sociable morning person.
You will note that I have not ticked the recommended box. This is not a slur on the house but a principle of mine never to recommend as people have widely differing expectations and I have highly recommended places to friends in the past who have been highly dissatisfied.on visiting.
