We stayed at this lovely guest house for two nights at the end of May 2008. The rooms are spacious, exceptionally clean and very well maintained. We had a view of the sea from our room which was just the icing on the cake!
Mac and Marion were welcoming, witty and made us feel so much at home that I wish we could have stayed longer. Marion's breakfasts are amazing, they really set you up for the day which is just as well as we walked for miles along the seafront or took the regular bus (which stops just at the end of the street) into Edinburgh and walked for miles round Edinburgh. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Portobello and hope to return in the future.

I stayed at Straven Guest House in May for 3 wonderful nights.

The rooms were lovely and spacious (and, strangely, much prettier than the photos suggest at their website!). I appreciated the hair dryer, tea/coffee/hot chocolate, and cookie! I loved the bathroom - I want the huge sink and tall, tall shower. Everything was spick and span clean.

There's a huge selection offered for breakfast between 8 and 9 am, including vegetarian and vegan options. I'm usually a light eater in the morning, so it was a challenge for me to eat the huge portions. Definitely try the porridge as a starter - the cream just makes it so much richer (and good!) than usual. On top of the hot menu, there's also orange/apple juice, cold cereals, homemade yoghourt, and stewed/fresh fruits.

For me, the location was perfect. It takes around 25 minutes to get right into the heart of the city, but you only take one bus that's half a block away and that runs every 5 to 10 minutes. Very convenient. I was glad to stay outside of the city, in a quieter area half a block away from the water - perfect for an evening stroll.

Mac and Marian were so welcoming, professional, and genuinely nice. Definitely recommended!

Our last night in Scotland after 12 days was a wonderful night at the Straven Guest House in Edinburgh.
Our only regret was that it was only one night.
Starting with a friendly welcoming smile and lots of information, followed by excellent accommodations: nice big comfortable bedroom, very nice modern bathroom with a large shower and a sink with one fawcett so no need to try to combine the hot water and cold water from two different ones! In a very tastefully decorated house.
The breakfast menu was also quite different from any other Bed & Breakfasts we stayed at in Scotland in that we had eight (8) different choices for the hot "meal"! in addition to lots of choices for the cold buffet.
The location could not be better, right next to the water. We had a great walk along the boardwalk and although it was cold and windy, it was marvelous!
And to top it all, they could not have been more helpful when we discovered we left some items, in ensuring they got shipped back safely to us.
We highly recommend Straven Guest House in Edinburgh.

It really is impossible to improve on previous comments. We stayed 4 nights in May and it was the highlight of our 3 week tour. Hosts were gracious, funny, and friendly. Room was perfectly comfortable and clean. Location is ideal near the beach and convenient bus stop to downtown and other locations.

Thank you for a great stay.

I spent three nights at the Straven and have to say it is one of the best guesthouses I have stayed in and I stay in a few. Mac is a wonderful man who cannot do enough for you the hospitality is wonderful. His wife Marian cooks the best breakfast and the combinations and selection would put most hotels to shame. The rooms are lovely well presented and so clean and fresh. Your stay would be memorable I know mine is.
