“Quiet cozy comfort and only a short hop to City Centre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2011

Two Americans on our first visit to Scotland. We stayed with Mac & Marian for 5 nights. From our standpoint, this location was ideal. Out the front door and 30 yards to the left, you're on the Portobello Beach. 30 yards to the right and you're at the Route 26 bus stop. We bought day passes for the bus & rode around to our hearts content. Getting our luggage on and off the bus on the first & last days were a small hassle but were well offset by this lovely location. The husband & wife hosts were wonderful & the breakfasts were 5 star quality and presentation. Mac scooted around the dining room seamlessly changing languages as he went. We wondered if the French family thought he had a Scottish accent. ;-) We also appreciated that Mac guaranteed us a ground floor room in advance since one of us has a bit of trouble with stairs. These folks also have free Wi-Fi even though we did not see that when we first booked the room. Evening walks on the beach promenade were wonderful. If you like horse racing, you're also a short busride & walk to the Musselburgh Racecourse when they are running.

Mac and Marion are fantastic hosts, instantly make you feel at home, maintain a beautiful (and spotless) B&B, and provide the most delicious breakfasts I've possibly ever had (be sure to try the "Scotish Decadence"- scrambled eggs with Scotish smoked salmon- it's amazing!)
Before booking I was slightly nervous about the 15 minute busride, but it's a straight shot into the city and the B&B is only yards from a beautiful beach- it allows for the best of both worlds- a quick ride to the city center and a beautiful, tranquil "home" to relax.
My only regret is not staying longer (my mother and I were there for 2 nights), but we easily could have enjoyed a week exploring Edinburgh, Portobello, and surrounding areas.
100% reccomended!

Room Tip: Request a seaside view.

We had a very lovely stay at Straven Guest House while traveling to Edinburgh with my husband and son in May. I asked for a triple room with a sea view when making reservations and that was provided. The view was a beautiful one indeed! Our room was very comfortable and large with amenities such as tea, coffee and biscuits provided each day. The breakfasts were so good. I tried the Salmon Decadence and the full English breakfast during our two day stay. I wish I could have tried more of the choices as there was plenty to choose from. The homemade yogurt parfaits were truly delightful and I highly recommend trying them! Mac and Marian were very friendly hosts and made you feel welcome from the start. We took the bus from the train station and it was a 30 min. ride to Straven Guest House, but well worth the ride. It's situated on the end of a quiet street and we took the opportunity to walk the promenade in the evening. Our only hassle while there was the Edinburgh marathon. We found out too late that on Saturday night they only took reservations at every restaurant in the city. And travel on Sunday morning was a bit slower than usual as we had to wait for the runners. Which wasn't that terrible, just be aware if you travel to Edinburgh during the marathon, make reservations well in advance for restaurants and allow a little extra travel time! If we travel to Edinburgh in the future we will be sure and book our reservations with the Straven Guest House!

Room Tip: top floor room with a seaview!

This past April my husband and I visited Edinburgh and stayed at the Straven Guest House and it was awesome! Way better than the hotel. Our room was so nice and really was a sanctuary to escape to when we were tired of walking. Mac and Marian were so welcoming. They helped us with any info we needed to know, from getting into the city, to where to eat. And to top it all off, Mac's homemade yogurt and preserves are amazing! We loved our stay at the Straven Guest House and highly recommend it!

Spent a long weekend at this guest house in May and had a brilliant time! It was warm, clean, comfortable and the couple who run it couldn't have been friendlier. The breakfasts were hot and tasty and we watched the royal wedding in a lovely visitor's lounge. I would wholeheartedly reccomend staying there.

Mac & Marion were so lovely to us, nothing was to much trouble, they were both full of enthusiasm with their advice as my sisters and I organised our sight seeing schedule for our four day stay at Straven. Breakfast is a must if you stay here, great choice of cerieal, fruit, traditional porridge and full English very well cooked, clean, once eaten you had a job to identify what had been on the plate, no trace of fat what so ever. 5 star fried egg, continuous top up of toast and tea, couldn't fault a single thing. Lovely clean comfortable beds and room. Warm cosy welcome home after a long day site seeing and a jug of fresh milk for our night time cuppa. Thanks for spoiling us x 3 it made my sisters 60th Birthday treat rememberable Thank you so much, see you again. Lyn, Stella and June xxxAcexxx

Superb location, right near the sandy beach, at the quieter end of Portobello. Lovely and peaceful as it's in a quiet road, and a few miles away from the constant noisy traffic of city centre Edinburgh. Wonderful for an early morning or evening walk by the sea. Very friendly, and great breakfasts. See website www.stravenguesthouse.com

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the sea!
