My daughter and I are from Texas and this was our first time in Scotland. We wanted to stay outside of Edinburgh so that accomodation and food would be more affordable. I found a B&B that was in Portobello which is right outside of the city of Edinburgh. That B&B was booked solid so they referred us to Straven Guest House and I am so glad they did! It was a wonderful location - just around the corner from the house is the Portobello promenade where you can walk on the shore of the North sea. You could hear the sound of the waves from the front steps of Straven GH. Mac and Marion are so warm and friendly and very helpful. I really liked the fact that this B&B is eco-friendly and give guests the opportunity to participate in the care of our environment - but they are not pushy about it. The breakfasts were so good and cooked to order. My daughter especially liked the large cups for her tea! The house is so clean and brightly colored. Our room was extremely comfortable, the beds were great and the en suite bath was roomy and so pretty. The bus stop is right at the corner of their street and very easy to use to get in and out of Edinburgh. We toured all over Edinburgh, took a Heart of Scotland tour to Loch Ness and the Highlands, and climbed the Wallace Monument in Stirling (a short train ride away from Edinburgh). Every evening we came back exhausted and fell into our comfy beds, watched tv then fell asleep. We just loved it and HIGHLY recommend Straven Guest House!

Just got back from a two night stay at the Straven. We really can't praise it enough , the welcome is warm and friendly and the place itself is just brilliant. Victorian charm mixes with modern comfort to make this a really special "B&B". Bedrooms are comfortable with a good ensuite. The house is right by the sea , located in a quiet residential street with loads of easy free parking right outside. There is a bus into Edinburgh centre every few minutes from the end of the road - it only costs £1, takes just 15 minutes to get you to Princes Street for food sightseeing and shopping. The Breakfast menu has loads of choices , there was plenty of whatever you chose and all of it excellent quality. All in all a fantastic find and we can't wait to go back ..

Straven Guest House was the best Bed & Breakfast we stayed in while in the UK earlier this year. Although all of our bed & breakfast accommodations were great., this one stood out above the rest. What made it so special was the wonderful hosts, the service and the immaculate presentation of the rooms. No questions were too much trouble, and the host was a mine of information. Thank you - we hope we can repay your kindness if you are ever in New Zealand.

We spent 4 nights at Straven Guest House in September. Mac & Marian are wonderful hosts. We were treated with great hospitality and genuine warmth. The location is great - a quiet residential area and one block from the beach! It's about a 30-minute bus ride into the city centre, but buses run frequently and the stop is just up the street from the guest house. The breakfast is delicious and plentiful - a great start to a busy day of sightseeing. The only critique I have is that the room decor was a little tired. Rooms were immaculately clean but could use a little facelift. The breakfast room, though, is charming.

The Straven Guest House is a wonderfully peaceful place to stay.
Mac and Marion are lovely people for whom nothing is too much trouble. Our room had a sea view and the sound of the sea at bedtime was most relaxing. Breakfast! - what can I say - so much choice, so little time and served in ambient surroundings. Mac is a superb host, the Guest House is immaculatelty clean. I could go on and on - but the best thing to do would be to see for yourself.
