My daughter and I are from Texas and this was our first time in Scotland. We wanted to stay outside of Edinburgh so that accomodation and food would be more affordable. I found a B&B that was in Portobello which is right outside of the city of Edinburgh. That B&B was booked solid so they referred us to Straven Guest House and I am so glad they did! It was a wonderful location - just around the corner from the house is the Portobello promenade where you can walk on the shore of the North sea. You could hear the sound of the waves from the front steps of Straven GH. Mac and Marion are so warm and friendly and very helpful. I really liked the fact that this B&B is eco-friendly and give guests the opportunity to participate in the care of our environment - but they are not pushy about it. The breakfasts were so good and cooked to order. My daughter especially liked the large cups for her tea! The house is so clean and brightly colored. Our room was extremely comfortable, the beds were great and the en suite bath was roomy and so pretty. The bus stop is right at the corner of their street and very easy to use to get in and out of Edinburgh. We toured all over Edinburgh, took a Heart of Scotland tour to Loch Ness and the Highlands, and climbed the Wallace Monument in Stirling (a short train ride away from Edinburgh). Every evening we came back exhausted and fell into our comfy beds, watched tv then fell asleep. We just loved it and HIGHLY recommend Straven Guest House!
