What a fantastic boutique guest house. It was so refreshing while travelling on business to be treated as a person not a hotel room number! The booking process was simple and efficient and the welcome very walm. The hotel and facilities were great and I understand that the new owners are refurbing the whole hotel to be more contemporary this November, not that it really needs it.
The breakfast is a good as any michelin star restaurant I have ever eaten in, with Paul one of the owners preparing all the food freshly including home made eggs benedict, a change from the old fry up!
The new plans for the hotel sound incredibly exciting, a breakfast conservatory, landsacped gardens and new top end bathrooms throughout, will make this an even better secret gem in Edinburgh.
Parking and a great location opposite Arthurs Seat, opening my curtains made for a breathtaking view.
On leaving I really was sad to go and felt like I had known the owners for ages. Just booked to go back later in the year with my wife and young son as I understand a family suite is being converted with a playstaion included, happy child = happy parents!!!
We originally booked our stay at MW Guesthouse back in April, having read such positive reviews on this site.
Upon our arrival, we were met by Paul who advised us that he had taken over the establishment at the start of the week. At first, we were thrown by this, however Paul put our minds at ease and advised us that our request to have a quiet room had been met and we were shown to our room.
The room was clean, modern and had a lovely view over the garden and the mountains in the distance. The bathroom was adequately sized, with a generous shower which delivered skin tingling pressure and temperature - wonderful. We settled in very quickly.
After an extremely comfortable night's sleep, we arose for breakfast (conveniently timed for a Sunday lie-in) and took our seats in the modernly decorated breakfast room. John advised us of the specials and whilst we perused the menu, he brought us freshly made coffee.
Our breakfast consisted of granola, rhubard and yoghurt (scrummy!), slices of wholemeal toast, my companion had the Scottish breakfast with a choice of eggs whilst I sampled blueberry pancakes, syrup and scrambled eggs. A wonderful start to the day.
On the evening, Paul gave us his recommendations on places to eat nearby and offered to book a taxi, as it was raining.
We stayed another two nights and the service was impeccable throughout. The room was serviced daily to the same standard as when we arrived and complimentary water replenished each day. Breakfasts continued to impress us and because I don't eat red/white meal, Paul had provided a number of alternative choices for me. I was spoiled!
Overall, everyone at MW Guesthouse made us feel welcomed. One thing to note, the new owners have plans to put their own stamp on the property and after hearing the proposed ideas - we can't wait to see them or Paul and John who made our stay that little bit more special!

My wife and I stayed 3 nights at MW Guesthouse in June 2008. This B&B is located right on Dalkeith Road, a main street in Edinburgh. It is within walking distance to Author's Seat, an old volcano overlooking the city. I hiked up there one morning, it has a good view of Edinburgh and the sea. From the Author's Seat, you can walk (about 30 minutes) to the Holyrood House Palace, the former home of Mary, Queen of Scots. The B&B is also walking distance, through the Holyrood Park, to Duddingston, a small village dating back to the 12th century. We had hot chocolate at the Sheep Heid Inn, a pub dating back to the 14th century. A local bus stop is in front of the B&B, and we took the bus to the Royal Mile to see major attractions such as the Edinburgh Castle. Walking to the Royal Mile from the B&B is about 30 minutes. Our room has a king size bed and is spacious and clean, and the shower facility is of high quality. There is no air conditioning, and you don't need it because Scottish summer is never too hot. Actually the weather was quite cool and windy when we were there. MW serves a hot Scottish breakfast with lean bacon, pork sausage, egg, tomatoes, beans, and blood sausage. The downside is that every morning has the same breakfast menu with no variety. The neighbourhood behind the B&B has many shops and small restaurants. There are Chinese takeaways down the street from the B&B, and the food was good. As of July 2008, MW will have a new owner with new management. Overall, MW is a pretty nice accommodation with good value.
