I stayed with my husband in the Hudson for a weekend break in the beginning of November. We were over to see a show in the Playhouse and do a bit of shopping. I had picked this hotel because of the good reviews on this site, its location and the modern décor in the rooms. Firstly - good location, we flew from Belfast to Edinburgh, got the Nr100 bus(£5 rtn p.p!!) from airport to the West End stop (city centre), easy peezy to find, just beside Ryan’s bar, on the corner of Princess St! You couldn’t get a better hotel for location for shopping/restaurants and bars.
When we got to the hotel (2mins from bus stop) there was a sign outside “best walk in rates guaranteed”, thought not very 4*! The reception is located in the corner of the bar, a wee desk. Thought ok…bit unprofessional looking! Check in was fast and efficient, the staff were really nice, we were given the key and shown the lift. I had booked through Active Hotels.com at £100 per night (Room only). We had been given Rm105…BOX room! Queen size bed, very little floor space, room was lovely decorated, but very very cramped, so much so I had no-where to put the suitcase. When we spoke the manager, Evelyn, at breakfast in the main bar the next morning she moved us to a bigger room for no extra charge for our second night! Now the room they moved us to (201)was a good size, similar in décor, had originally been a twin and the two beds were made up as one, very comfortable! White bed linen, colourful throws, Plasma TV, hairdryer, bathrobes, Jaffa cakes for your tea/coffee, stocked mini bar(complimentary water!) Room was definitely 4*! The hotel’s main bar is lovely also, projector TVs, very modern décor, champagne cocktails! Bar men wearing black kilts! There’s a nightclub down in the basement of the hotel also.
Only criticism I would have is the room we were relocated to (201) had old sash windows and as it was Saturday night in Edinburgh, the revellers were out to 4am and we heard every word from the street below, police sirens, guys fighting, even people walking in high heals could be heard! The fire alarm went off in the hotel at 3am also, false alarm someone in the nightclub had set it off.
Would I stay in this hotel again, probably, as I liked the location and the décor. I would ask for a big room and make sure I didn’t have a street facing one ie not facing Princess St or Ryan’s Bar as you won’t get any sleep! Good hotel for a singles weekend away or hen night!!
