We stayed in the Hudson hotel for 2 nights in August for close proximity to the book festival. On arrival we were met by an extremely snooty girl on reception. We asked if we could possibly have a quiet room - she said ours was 'quietish' in the kind of tone that was 'you should be grateful to have a room at all' and made no attempt to try and move us. We got to the room which was quiet enough. They are really dark affairs with dark brown walls. We only had a tiny window so it was very stuffy and dark. The main light in the centre of the room did not work so I called to reception to ask if it could be changed. The girl assured me that it would - it was never changed through the whole stay. The bed was comfortable enough but the pillows were like boards. The bathroom was fine but you had to go down 3 stairs to get to it which was a challenge in such a dark room in the middle of the night. The only plus point for the room was the free wireless connection and pack of jaffa cakes. Other than that it was pretty average.
The main reason for my low review was that on the first night we returned to the hotel nearing 2am after a late night comedy show. When we arrived the hotel was totally locked and there was no body around. We looked for an intercom system, bell, swipe card, notice etc but there was nothing. We started to knock gently (this went on for a bout 5 minutes) by which time we were starting to panic a bit. Eventually my partner had had enough and rapped the door VERY hard (apologies to those he may have woken!). Eventually a man appeared. He let us in and I questioned him as to why the door was locked. He was very rude and said it was locked at 1am for security and that he had been 'around' and can't have been knocking for 5 minutes, insinuating it was our fault for not being back by 1am. I was so angry at his rudeness. I completely understand the need for security but we had not been informed of this curfew at check in, there was nothing in the welcome letter we were given or in the hotel information supplied in the room. Even a notice on the door or an intercom would have helped. Apparently you have to know things by telepathy if you stay at the Hudson!
All of these factors have lead me not to recommend this hotel. The Hudson seemed to be riding on a 'exclusive and boutique' reputation which is unfortunately at the expense of customer service. The rooms are OK but nothing special, I would only stay in the Hudson if you really have to - there are much better options in Edinburgh!
