Angela Mc Donald is a terrific and friendly hostess who instantly makes you feel at home. The house and rooms are truly lovely, there is a wonderful glassed-in winter garden where you can eat breakfast or enjoy a cup of afternoon tea. The breakfast is fabulous! Every evening you turn in a checked-off list of what you would like to have for breakfast the following morning.
While we were there, Angela mentioned that they were going to buy new furniture for some or all of the rooms. Which brings me to the only thing I did not find wonderful about the house/room: the mattress on the double bed ( we had a room for 4) was not super comfortable, but this mattress may have been replaced by now. One should also be aware that due to traffic during the day, the bus ride into Edinburgh took about 25-30 minutes, not 15. But the busses are frequent and the bus stop is right outside The Abercorn so it is very easy and convenient. The nearby beach promenade is nice, so be sure to take a liitle walk down there. (Only 2 blocks away). Portobello is a quiet and peaceful area, so of you want to get away from city noise, this is the place to be.
It was our daughter's birthday while we were there, and on the morning of her birthday there was a card and a huge box of candies from Angela and her husband outside our door. This shows what a thoughtful and warm person Angela really is. She was always ready with good advice and a cheery hello to start you off on you day.
