“Worst experience EVER!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2010

As it was Easter weekend my friend and I were limited to available accommodation. It was cheap and thought it is just a bed for the night. When we went to check in, we were met with a nippy rude old lady who wasn't pleasant at all (who said customer service was important!) we were told we had to settle our bill there and then when we arrived and told that they weren't 24hrs and had to be back sharp at 3am or would be locked out. One would have thought that because they asked you leave your key at reception when you were out that this would be for security reasons (how wrong and mistaken you would be) Myself and a friend return to the hotel to find our key had already been taken. I was very alarmed by this. I asked if there was another key to get into the room. When the lady opened our hotel room I was surprised to find a drunken naked man in my bed snoring his head off. I could not believe this had happened. The strangeness of find this man in my bed was only eclipsed by the hotel blaming us for his presence. To sum up I would rather sleep on a park bench than frequent here again.

The receptionist was not welcoming or pleasant . The bed was spongy. The bedside light was faulty. There was no hotwater. At £70 for the night with no breakfast included this is not good value for money

My friend & I decided to do a road trip to Scotland for 3 nights in July 2009, starting off at Edinburgh. We came across this hotel on the internet and were drawn to the price. Anyway, with us only having a limited budget, we went ahead and booked a twin room for the night.

Firstly, the good points: The staff were very helpful in pointing us in the right direction of where everything was (Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile etc.) as we had never visited Edinburgh before. Also, the hotel was located just around the corner from a massive overnight car park which I must say was very handy seen as there were roadworks everywhere due to the new tram line being installed.

Now, the bad points: The room was not very clean. The bathroom carpet looked really worn and the towels had white stains on them (like bleach stains) and after a brief inspection of the inside of the bed, I thought it might be an idea to sleep on top of the covers. The hotel believe it or not actually allowed smoking in the rooms and with the smoking ban & also us not being smokers ourselves, this came as a bit of a shock. The room was aired well but you could easily tell that people had smoked in there in the past. From the outside, the hotel didn't look very inviting and when this is your first destination on an 800 mile road trip, it doesn't fill you with lots of confidence.

All in all, a cheap-ish hotel near the heart of Edinburgh, for smokers................and that's it!

Stayed here for the Fringe 2009. On reading the reviews we were dreading the stay. However, they all did a GREAT disservice to this hotel. The staff were friendly, the hotel was clean and didn't smell of dogs. The rooms were well equipped and nowhere near as bad as the other reviews portray. It is also near enough to walk to all the Fringe action.
Good value for money. As the owner said.."If people are unhappy, they should tell us, and we can do something about it..not just write bad reviews". Stay here. It's GOOD.

Having read the reviews I was expecting the worst staying here, but I needed to find a room last minute and it was during the Edinburgh festival, so I was just pleased to find anything! The location is very good indeed. Yes, the reception area did smell of dog, but you don't have to sleep there and the service was absolutely fine. I was staying in a single room, which was cheap for the UK especially given the festival was on (£55). The room had character and was small - almost as tall (high ceilings) as it was long! The room was quite adequate and clean. The only downside was the shower went from freezing to scorching in a very small movement of the tap (but I got the right temperature eventually) and there was no breakfast included. Having read the other reviews I wondered whether the standard of room varies or if they have improved things in light of these kind of comments!

  • Liked — Cheap and great location
  • Disliked — A bit rundown, but quite adequate
