“Excellent Guest house!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2008

We chose this guest house due to it being closed to the Waverley train station and also the coach station right next door.

What we discovered when we arrived is a wonderful guest house with the most helpful host and staff! Location is absolutely convenient. With a shopping centre within minutes walk, plenty of pubs and restaurants around. Royal Mile is only about 5-10minutes walk. Breakfast every morning was lovely and very filling!

We have been travelling for 3 weeks and needed some laundry done. We couldn't find any laundromat around and when we asked Alan about this, he offered to do our laundry for us! What a lovely surprise.

The accommodation is on the 3rd floor, so it won't be for anyone with difficulty climbing lots of stairs.
Definitely highly recommended if you're in Edinburgh!

Elder York is in a v good location, about 30 seconds from bus station. As mentioned, it is on 3rd and 4th floors without a lift so this may put some people off. It is spotlessly clean, provided v good breakfast, nice staff and nice little touches - def recommended unless you have mobility problems

  • Liked — Greal location, v clean
  • Disliked — Watch out for the stairs

We stayed here for two nights, the room was very nice and up to date with lcd digital tv and hairdryer etc. The bathroom was average size but plenty big enough. It is three floors up before you reach reception but we knew this before we stayed and didnt mind it. The breakfast was nice and the staff helpful with free whisky and rum to help yourself to a tot when you come in. Top tip the car parking is in a ncp car park the first entrance leads to the lower floors and is charged at £19.00 per 24 hours, but the second entrance just about 100 yds on leads up to the top floors its a circular trip upwardsand there is no lift but the charge is £10.00 per 24 hours.

Elder York Stay 27th - 29th June 2008.

I arrived at the Elder 11.30am on the 27th June 2008 with five of my friends. And like previous reports there's 43 steps to contend with, before you reach the reception area, so take this into consideration before booking, if you happen not to be good on your legs, or if you intend to take heavy luggage with you. And also note there are more steps if your room is not on the same floor has the reception.

Room 3. This was a twin En-suite room that I was staying in for the weekend. My impression of this room was not very good over the weekend, because the bedding on my bed had two blood stains on it, and the bedding and quilt and bed covers had seen better days has well. And secondly, there was heavy dust that had gathered around the room, this gave me the impression that that rooms only ever see a quick clean between guests change over's.

Manager. Ian the manager was very helpful & friendly when I asked him for information about Edinburgh. The only negative thing about him, was that he was never about at breakfast time to interact with the guest's, because this would of been the perfect time to chat to him.

Breakfast. There was a selection of help yourself Cereal's,Fruit Juice,Fresh Fruit, Yoghurt. Then to follow up was the Full Scottish Fry Up (Other Options available) The Bacon was over cooked both day's and so was my egg. On the second day I asked for my egg to be runny, but it still arrived well cooked like the day before. I also had to asked for my pot of Tea both day's or I'm sure that I would not of got it, better training for the two staff is needed. Breakfast room was nice and clean looking.

My over all experience with the Elder was OK. But the place needs to be deep cleaned all over the guest house more often, because to me this place is not clean enough. I thought my room was a bit dated as well.

Would I stay their again, yes I would if I was away with the lads again only, because the Elder is located in the town centre.

I stayed for 3 nights in January 2008.

Great location - adjacent to coach station and 5 minutes from Waverley railway station.

Very clean and well kept. Breakfast was excellent. I though it was great value for money.

Only downside was the stairs (it was on 2nd and 3rd floors of a building), but don't let it put you off unless you've got mobility problems or lots of luggage!

The owner has two lovely cats, so this guest house is one to go for if you're a cat lover!

Spent 2 nights at the Elder York. Fantastic location-- walking distance to the train station, Princes St. shopping, Castle, Royal Mile. Good restaurants nearby. Quiet, despite the central location. Carrying luggage up 3 flights of stairs with no lift was a bit of a bother, but easily overlooked. Clean, spacious room (we had a double ensuite). Bathroom was small with a tiny shower, but I've certainly had smaller elsewhere, and water temperature/pressure were fine. Hostess was great-- friendly, and helped with travel arrangements. Great breakfast-- full Scottish or vegetarian Scottish with large portions, plus cereals, fruits, etc. Coffee/tea/biscuits in the room, and free whisky and sherry in the reception area-- can't beat that! Would recommend and would stay there again!

I stayed here at the end of a 23 day journey through England, Ireland, Scoland and France In July of 2003. I was getting weary so my perception was probably a little colored. The room was clean, the bath very clean. The breakfast was excellent. Climbing three flights of stairs and sharing the toilet were the only negatives.I was in much better shape when I left for the journey home. The Elder House is in a fine location near the train station and Prince Street . The manager was very helpful. Very homey feel to the place.
